Almost every case highlighted on the news has a couple of consistent denominators. Some sort of resistance or failure to comply with commands, and involving overwhelmingly black suspects. The Ferguson Effect, has emboldened blacks all over this Country to resist and defy the police. There seems to be a narrative out there that suggests that if the suspect is unarmed, deadly force cannot be used. We have done a horrible job of explaining the justification of using deadly force and a weapon is not necessary if the officer feels that he is about to be seriously injured or worse. Way to many officers have been seriously injured or killed by being overpowered by unarmed suspects. The latest example was the Alabama Detective that was physically overwhelmed, had his gun taken from him, and then pistol whipped and knocked out. This detective isn't dead because the suspect decided not to kill him. Size, drug, or alcohol crazed or mentally ill combative suspects can cause injury or death with their bare hands, and can use the officers weapons they take from him, against him. Shame on us for not being more proactive about this
