For decades, the Sarasota Sheriff's Office has maintained holding cells at the Venice Police Department. People arrested in South County can be detained there, then transferred to the main jail at the north edge of the county in downtown Sarasota.

Sarasota County is the only county in Florida that has a main jail at the extreme edge of the county limit. All the other Florida sheriff's offices have main jails that are centrally located in a county.

“It's really a gracious courtesy that I provide,” Knight said.

Since Knight became sheriff, deputies are arresting significantly fewer people. For example, before Knight became sheriff, deputies averaged 2,077 arrests in 2007, but after Knight came into office, deputies had an arrest-slowdown of 60 percent consisting of only 1,255 arrests in 2012.

Since officers are now making fewer arrests, Knight is questioning whether the $1 million-plus annual operating expenses are worth it.

“We inherit risk by keeping it open,” Knight said, referring to the possibility that an arrestee could have a health emergency.

Sarasota County is the only county in Florida that has a main jail at the extreme edge of the county limit. All the other Florida sheriff's offices have main jails that are centrally located in a county.
The north Sarasota jail is 4 miles (5 minutes) from the northern county border at University Parkway.

The north Sarasota jail is 38.5 miles away from the south end of Englewood on S.R. 776. Driving time is about an hour one-way.

The north Sarasota jail is 32.9 miles from the south end of U.S. 41 in North Port. Driving time is about an hour one-way.

The population of central and south County is now larger than the population of north county. The population of south county is also projected to explode. North county has too much build-out to grow fast, but the south county population is exploding.

Now is NOT the time for Knight to threaten closing down Sarasota Sheriff's Office services to south county residents.

Don't turn this into a another political posturing Knightmare.

70% of all intakes at the south county jail are NPPD arrest at any cost crap. They are so f*cking gung ho on arresting everyone they deal with to get their $100 investigative fee.
If they want to arrest everyone that looks sideways at them, let them build their own holding tank and transfer to north county instead.

Can Knight legally refuse to take south county arrestees from the VPD holding cells? Check out the legal beagle's answer at viewtopic.php?f=84&t=153214&p=1084337#p1084337 (http://forums.leoaffairs.com/viewtopic.php?f=84&t=153214&p=1084337#p1084337)

Another poster mentioned that almost three quarters of those processed and transported to north county are from the NPPD.
So does North Port have any dog in this race contractually or financially?
Is the county or the city of Venice obligated to the city of North Port in anyway regarding the use of the facility or it's services?

Knight is too argumentative and confrontational.

In north county, Knight openly criticized the SPD chief (and was filmed doing it) instead of meeting with her privately.

When the VPD commissioners asked Knight about why he was not providing many services to south county, Knight retaliated by threatening to close down the VPD jail.

Everything is a "confrontational threat" to Knight. Knight even has SSO sergeants who are suing him in court because of his retaliatory-confrontational tactics against SSO employees.

Is there a contractual agreement between the City of Venice and the Sarasota Sheriff's Office from 1992? And if there is, then can Knight choose to ignore it since it was a different sheriff who signed the agreement? Why should the current sheriff abide by the agreements of previous sheriffs?

I seriously doubt you will have much luck with any special units anywhere and if you work in NP and write like you did in this post, oh wow.
