SARASOTA - Sarasota Police arrested home health care worker Tamara S. Murphy last week after authorities say she stole more than $20,000 in cash, jewelry and designer purses from a 95-year-old client who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

But the victim's son said police did not arrest Murphy for two weeks, a delay he says could have placed other seniors at risk.

Police point out the suspect was arrested. A thorough investigation takes time, they say, and more charges are likely.

Lance Spotts, 58, said he took Murphy and plenty of evidence to the police station — where reports show Murphy confessed to stealing from Spotts' mother — but officers waited before making an actual arrest, saying the detective responsible was away attending SWAT training.

“Sarasota is known as an elderly area. We should protect the elderly,” Spotts said. “Florida is pretty big on that.”

Police administrators told Spotts that Murphy was cooperative, had ties to the community and was not likely to flee.

Murphy hung up the phone when contacted by the Herald-Tribune.

Spotts hired Murphy four months ago to care for his mother, whom he said is suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's. Murphy was recommended by another caregiver, Solice Shute.

“I feel terrible about recommending her, but I had no way of knowing,” Shute said Friday. “It's hard to explain the fallout for me, Lance and his mother. She's sleeping with her purse next to her bed now because she's so scared.”

Spotts, who manages his mother's finances, first realized something was wrong when he received several bounced checks from her account. Four were made out to “cash” for amounts ranging from $100 to $250, and were endorsed by Murphy.

He spoke to Shute about his discovery.

The blame lies with sonny boy, not law enforcement.
