View Full Version : Hendry County taking over

It is my understanding that the Sheriff is planning to take over all operations and responsibilities of the Police Department. Allegedly the city manager and the sheriff are planning this. Anyone hear when this is supposed to occur?

The Sheriff has made comments about this, saying he could run it better.

Thoughts?

A) Not the City Manager's Call - would take the approval of the City Commission, public hearings, notice, etc.

B) How does one take over a police agency that is better run than the Sheriff's Office?
CPD has better Vehicles, Radios, Equipment, Uniforms and LEADERSHIP!

C) Doesn't CPD pay better than the SO? How would one correct that little disparity, cut the CPD Officers' Pay? That will go over well.

D) This rumor pops up about every 3 years or so, Whidden keeps perpetuating it as he's power hungry and would like nothing more than to stick it to anyone at CPD who did or does not support him. He had an opportunity to combine dispatch with CPD a few years back but opted out over "turf wars." (That and it made too much sense to do it!)

E) If the city had any faith in the Sheriff, wouldn't they have contacted him instead of FDLE when a certain invesigation was "needed" a while back?

If people knew just how much bargaining & work goes into consolidating law enforcement agencies this stupid rumor wouldnt keep popping up. But, then again, most people are nothing more than sheep who will believe anything.

It will never happen...It is election year BS and everyone see's through it. If it wasn't such a drive I would apply there.

not to mention dual taxation.

this has been fought in other cities / counties over and over and has a lot of caselaw on the topic. the county will continue to tax the city residents together with the city continuing to tax the same residents. regardless of who runs the show, there will be dual taxation and the courts back it up. what needs to be done is the city needs to demand adequate additional services from the sheriff as they are getting taxed already for his services but he doesn't provide any. time to start raising hell with him to get off his butt and provide these additional services to supplement the city police services as well.
