Just curious about KWPD been thinking about retiring in the keys, (27 years experience) and joining the force. Seems like there always hiring, and dont keep people long. Is it the high rent, people getting tired of the bar crowd, or ????

Thanks

KWPD is a revolving door for a few reason, depending on what your looking for, it may or may not be for you...

The first is the cost of living in the Keys. Everything is inflated and the City of Key West does not pay for experience. Everyone starts at the bottom. <$20.00 an hour.

Followed by an incompetent leadership structure, which likes to rule by fear and intimidation, giving special treatment to certain people, while finding ways to work over others. I suggest you make a records request and read that last 2-5 years worth of IA's before making a decision. You will be able to see the writing on the wall, who is liked, who is not.

The agency members on the ground (Troops) are a GREAT group of hard working individuals, however, the leadership is in a constant mix up of treating people like garbage.

If the leadership likes you, you will have the world, if they don't, you'd better play your cards right.

The calls for service are moderate, and it is busy enough to keep it interesting. If you are dedicated, you will get specialty training, if you are lazy, you will get placed into a zone and left to rot.

The agency has specialty units, but again, there is more to it than just being interested and good at something, it's all about who you know, or how they like you. Sometimes people get placed into units i.e. "Marine" because it's a lame unit, which babysits cruise ships, because they weren't making the cut in Patrol. Not necessarily to the guy or girl who wants/deserves it.

Overall, if you look at any agency on this site, they all gripe about the same things, or close to.

KWPD isn't the worst place in the world, but it certainly isn't the best. Just be prepared before you move your family all the way down here. Be prepared for the cost, the leadership, the issues...
