The Fraternal Order of Police Vice President Gus Sanchez said union members unanimously voted to approve the move. He said it's a reaction to the city's contract negotiations with his officers. Sanchez said the city is trying to cut their pensions and benefits.
"I'm not gonna be arm stronged by the police department, any union," said Miami Beach Mayor Mattie Bower. "I think it's really strategically wrong to have done this at this time. But that's what they chose to do."
Bower is upset about the move, but she said the city's safety will not be compromised. She said officers from outside police departments will be contracted for the job.
"The residents can feel safe. The tourists could come down and they should feel safe; we are gonna have people in the street, police in the street and you won't see a difference," Bower said.
But Sanchez said that's not true. The city is looking at bringing in officers from other cities. Sanchez said some of those officers are from rural areas. "There's no central way of contacting them in case of an emergency," said Sanchez. "They have no experience dealing with urban communities."
