From the News-Press:
"Cape Coral police Chief Rob Petrovich said that in the early 2000s, his department created a unit dedicated solely to following up on domestic cases."

Really??

I think it was Vince Mazarra in the late 90's and he left after a falling out with someone on top. Petrovich was Lieutenant of ISB then?

Late 1990's then Vince went on to create the program for Palm Beach County: http://www.barry.edu/barrymagazine/2008spring/protectserve/serpico.htm. See "Compassionate Policing" section.

Petrovich has been an embarrassment as police chief. He's a fine example of what happens when you hire from within instead of doing a proper search for a new chief. Lets hope the city doesn't repeat this mistake the next time around.

CCPD did have a domestic unit on 2004, the first detectives were Grau and Lanza.

But three years ago, budget cuts forced Petrovich to close the unit. Domestic violence is still a priority, he said, but it’s still higher than he’d like to see it. He hopes to re-open the unit when the economy rebounds.

Domestic violence has to be a priority because it happens and it creates a dangerous situation for officers. Instead of cutting units - how about not overpaying top dogs, soaking up overtime to add weight to pensions, etc?

The economy is not going to rebound anytime soon.

Now that's crazy talk, he'll cut more units before any of that ever happens!

The ambush of an officer in Washington State came in as a domestic violence call: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34615401/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/
