Hey I'm about to go through the HCC poilce academy and once I get done with it I would really like to apply for PCSO and I just had a few questions to ask some of you guys that might know, does the department usually hire new officers right out of the academy and do they like you to have A.A. or B.A. degree or are they not as important?????

08-10-2009, 10:19 PM
Yes, Yes, and go apply somewhere else. Since you posted this same message on Bartow PD's blog exactly 3 mins before you posted it here, you should prob apply in Hillsborough county. good luck with that zipper head :snicker:

Whats with the attitude, I'm just trying to get some insite before i apply.....whats wrong with trying to go for more than one department.....I want to be a cop and who ever will pick me up first they have me for my whole career. I'm sure when you started out you had more than one department in mind correct????

LMAO....Ahhh, to be young and idealistic again!....Get back to us in about 5 years if you start at a small PD and let us know where you work then.

Put in an application, we got a grant for 30 new deputies and 30 SSO's that will respond to and answer calls. Grant starts in October.

To the previous quest who stated that HR is ready to "push" through 20 apps this week... I hope you're guessing that and dont have any proof. The reason I say that is because they dont need to be "pushing" apps. Cause if they do, they will continue to get a mixed ratio of deupties hired. Right now it seems that its a 40/60 ratio. 40% squared away.. 60% screaming sissy douchbags who do this job praying that they will never be in a situation like sept 28th 2006. while at alert, I heard a deputy state that they "have no intention of EVER shooting anybody". scary huh.. they could be your back-up. I hope HR takes the time to look through every application with great concern. But, as previous posts state,, there is at least one dude who is going to devote his life to whatever agency hires him first... somebody get that guy a subscription to Cosmo and 2 tickets to an Adam Lambert concert Quickly !!!!

WOW, thats all I can say to happy guest's comment WOW.... He is on the money with that....

08-14-2009, 01:18 AM
you think they're really gonna put those sso's on the road taking calls? c'mon man. leave fantasyland and come back to reality. it won't happen. they'll see too much liability in it. plus, it would only make you angry if they did. especially when the sso goes to some b.s. past occurred incident and calls for a deputy because the victim DEMANDS one. supervisors won't stand up to the citizens any longer and call them to tell them they have an opportunity to make their report with an sso and no deputy is actually needed at the scene or going to respond.

08-14-2009, 11:34 AM
its going to be the same as it is now " no sso 10-8" sso has sent the call back,,,,,, or if a certain sso is on who always shows 10-7,,,,, calls pend for the deputies why cant they pend for a sso

Ive been here long enough to share that same fear. BUT, from what ive been led to believe, the sheriff has to do with the grant money as it in intended or else he doesnt get it. of course my source was not a staff member ( and we all know the sheriff's opinion on what he is "required" to do when conducting everyday business varies greatly from reality) and im not familiar with grants so if anybody has CORRECT insight on the rules/laws pertaining to grants, please share.

Wow...that sounds really gay.

Oh yes the federal bill to hire 20 new deputies, most of you were to young to remember a former president, I believe his name was Clinton, didn’t he have a national federal bill to hire how many 1000s of police officers nation wide, and when the money ran out, how many cops LOST THEIR JOBS, due to the departments couldn’t afford to keep them, lets get real, boys and girls in green, lets not worry about the new hires. Our biggest concern is how the county commission is going to pay for all the law suites against Judd. The latest suit was served on July 29, 09 in the amount of 29 million, Judd was served, and also failed to appear, after 20 days which means the suit is now in default, the commission is aware of this and is now scratching their heads, and don’t forget the Scott Lawson case is coming up, another suit in the amount of 1.2 million. Look at your own jobs, lets do our best and continue to serve the citizens of Polk, let’s strive to get better equipment, and watch each others backs. I’m still proud to be green how about you.

I was employed here back when ole Slick Willey funded those thousands of "cops" deputies and for those that worked here can remember having 14+- deputies on each shift, however, when the funding ended, NOBODY got fired or laid off, the man power was simply shifted around everybody kept their jobs. The Sheriff has a new lawsuit placed on his desk probably every other day but I agree with you guest 134 when you question how he could let a $29 mil lawsuit go into defualt. Having said that, I do not know the facts of that case so im not about to comment on it but if you do, feel free to share. I am proud to be green and for those of you who arent, go read the blogs of Bartow PD and Lakeland PD and go apply there. Let me know how it works out but you better hurry before the orignal guest who started this topic gets there, cause rememebr this "I want to be a cop and who ever will pick me up first they have me for my whole career". :cop:

08-21-2009, 07:03 PM
Your trying to tell me that there is a 29 million dollars lawsuit and no one replied or showed up so it automatically gets paid. I'm not the Worlds smartest person but that almost seems comical. 29 million dollars? WOW.... I just can't see that when they worry about gas prices and you not getting a good mpg but 29 million dollars. Say it isn't so....

I seem to remember that suits against government agencies in Florida have a cap; with the awarded being no more than a max of $200,000.00 dollars. Unless, the plaintiff can prove gross negligence; then the skies the limit I believe. However, I believe this requires approval by the state senate and of course proof of gross negligence.

I said all that to say, a suit for $2 million would still, I believe, only be an award of $200k. Anyone less have any info?

08-27-2009, 02:23 AM
Just an example of a suit against a FL agency... even though the cap is 200k, the state or county will likely have to pay the rest. This was taken off the BSO board.

Family's hunt for truth ends as Sheriff's Office concedes policies were not followed
By Jon Burstein | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
September 5, 2008
The Broward Sheriff's Office failed to follow its own policies in a botched 2004 raid that left Detective Todd Fatta dead, Sheriff Al Lamberti acknowledged Thursday as the agency reached a $2 million settlement with the late deputy's family.

A special weapons unit, commonly known as a SWAT team, should have been used to execute the arrest warrant for Kenneth Wilk, a child porn suspect who was known to be armed and hate police, Lamberti said.

"We are here today to let everyone know that the right thing to do is take care of this so the family has closure ... and that we have healing in the Broward Sheriff's Office," Lamberti told a news conference.

Wilk shot Fatta, 33, once in the chest with a Winchester rifle and wounded Sgt. Angelo Cedeño when sheriff's deputies raided his Fort Lauderdale home on Aug. 19, 2004.

Jury selection in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Fatta's family had been set to begin Monday. If the case had gone to trial, a parade of former and current Sheriff's Office personnel could have been called to the witness stand, including former Sheriff Ken Jenne, who was in charge when Fatta was killed.

After Thursday's news conference, Fatta's mother, Josephine Fatta, embraced Lamberti. The family has said its lawsuit wasn't about money, but finding out the truth. "We miss our son very much," Josephine Fatta said. "It took four years for this to come to an end."

Under Thursday's court-approved settlement, the Sheriff's Office agreed to pay $200,000 to Fatta's family — the maximum allowed under state law. The agency also will endorse a $1.8 million claims bill for the state Legislature's approval.

Fatta's family had argued it was clear a SWAT team should have been used to arrest Wilk. Rank-and-file personnel were also afraid to question their superiors' decisions because Jenne's administration fostered a culture of fear and intimidation, the family's attorneys said.

A team consisting entirely of SWAT members had been used at the same home a month earlier to search for child pornography. At that time, Wilk's partner, Kelly Ray Jones, was arrested.

In addition, Sheriff's Office plans for both raids warned of guns in the home. Wilk had a gun on him during a previous search and a history of run-ins with law enforcement.

A federal jury convicted Wilk last year of first-degree murder and he was sentenced to life in prison. Wilk is appealing. One of his arguments is that the judge improperly excluded evidence that the Sheriff's Office botched the raid.

Lamberti said that while the agency failed to take every precaution possible, "Kenneth Wilk was obviously hell-bent on killing a deputy that day."

The Fatta family's attorneys, who have been critical of Jenne's administration, commended Lamberti at Thursday's news conference.

"You [Lamberti] are the first person to stand up and face the family and tell them the truth," said Andrew Yaffa, one of the lawyers.

Jenne said in a sworn statement last month that Fatta wouldn't have been killed if the agency had obeyed its own policies and used the better-equipped SWAT members. Jenne made the admissions in a deposition he gave at a federal prison in Virginia, where he had been serving a sentence for mail fraud and conspiracy.

Lamberti announced Thursday he has put together a committee to examine what went wrong with the raid. After Fatta's death, the Sheriff's Office revised its SWAT policy, calling for the team to execute any forced entries and to have paramedics on scene. That policy will be named in Fatta's honor as part of the settlement.

Fatta's father said his son knew at an early age he wanted to be a police officer.

"He always wanted to do things right," said Joseph Fatta Jr.

Wait a minute! By posting this artilce, are you saying the Sheriff, Cheifs, and Staff members follow or ignore general orders when they see fit and that its members might be afraid to speak up for fear of punishment or intimidation?

Duhhhhhhhhh!!! Ya Think?

I love working here funny how some see a conspiracy and love to gossip.

09-07-2009, 03:26 AM
I love working here too!

When it comes to overlooking, side stepping, or some such other failure to follow policies our agency’s staff is not immune from mistakes. (may the CLEA gods never learn of such sacrilege) The article quoted above is more a reflection of that agency (which has had many difficulties over the years) than ours. I believe our agency behaves by the rules more than most. Further, there will always be matters which skate policies or are not addressed directly by GOs.

I would like to add here for benefit of those who will inherit the mantels of leadership; and perhaps to exercise my own demon on this point about policies! PLEASE, remember the folks below you are people and written policies are best when they are adhered to. Morale levels will ebb and flow, but if you write a policy and then verbally negate the written policy (waiting two years to rewrite it) don’t be surprised when someone writes about it on a public form.

The policy? How about I just say, “It was, what it was” and “It is, what it is”. If you dont get it dont worry about it, it did not then or now apply to you.

After reading the above post and the bloggers patehtic attempt to sound intelligent and articulate, it confirms to me that this person is one of the screaming sissy douchebags mentioned in a previous post on this topic. To put it another way " the ebb and flow of dounche'ness (from you) have the douche gods screaming of sacrilege and reflect upon our desires for you to never write another response on leo affairs again.
