Lee Sheriff’s Office commander demoted following cattle concerns

Allegations of sick cattle and a seemingly exploitative relationship with a neighbor were central to the recent demotion of a Lee County Sheriff’s Office district commander.

Capt. Rex Shevitski, former commander of the agency’s Gulf District, was demoted to lieutenant last week after a pair of investigations substantiated complaints of improper conduct and abusiveness.

He also received a 5 percent pay cut.

Internal Affairs investigators opened the cases after Shevitski’s acquaintance and fellow cattleman, Fred Kobie, e-mailed the agency a lengthy complaint with multiple allegations.

Among the most damning was Kobie’s claim that Shevitski alerted him to a Sheriff’s Office investigation into Kobie’s son for cattle theft. Shevitski admitted to telling Kobie as much.

Kobie claimed that Shevitski then underpaid him for air conditioning work, claiming the labor was “payment for keeping (Kobie’s) son out of jail,” according to the report.

That allegation was unfounded, as was another complaint that Shevitski had sick cattle on his property and had two cows killed by Kobie because they were unhealthy.

The Sheriff’s Office’s agricultural unit and a veterinarian deemed Shevitski’s cows healthy.

One of the investigations found that Shevitski was abusive to another deputy with the agency’s Agricultural Unit, which handles farm-related issues, and that he inserted himself into the unit’s business. Shevitski admitted he had spoken negatively of the deputy, Corporal Randy Hodges, to coworkers and friends. He said he often showed up to calls for the Agricultural Unit because he knows area cattlemen.

A third investigation into claims that Shevitski harassed his deputies was unfounded.

Replacing Shevitski is former Lt. Richard Dobson, previously the second-in-command of the east Lee County district.

A Lee County Sheriff’s captain has been demoted to the rank of lieutenant after an internal investigation revealed he was abusive to another member of the agency and also interfered with an active investigation.

Rex Shevitski has been demoted and will immediately receive a 5 percent pay reduction.
According to the Internal Affairs reports, complaints for insubordination by abusiveness and improper conduct were substantiated.

Lt. Robert Bal investigated the complaints, which centered on derogatory statements Shevitski, who oversees the Marine Unit, made regarding Corporal Randy Hodges and Shevitski’s involvement into investigations within the Agricultural Unit.

Several complaints against Shevitski were made by resident Fred Kobie Sr., a farmer who also has an air conditioning business. Some of the allegations were that Shevitski had dangerously fired his weapon, expected to be charged less for air conditioning services in exchange for keeping Kobie’s son out of jail, told Kobie’s young son about a prostitution arrest and came to Kobie with information about Kobie’s son being under investigation for theft of cattle. Bal determined only the last allegation could be proven, and that by contacting Kobie regarding an open investigation that was not under his unit, he had violated agency policy.

A separate investigation into statements Shevitski made about Hodges determined Shevitski’s words and actions were also against policy.
A third investigation, in which two deputies accused Shevitski of harassment, was determined in May to be unfounded.


I have a couple of questions?

Why wasn’t Capt. S administratively suspended like others have been?

Why was he not fired for leaking information concerning an active investigation?

Why was he only demoted one rank and allowed to stay in place when Bushong was demoted 2 ranks for a lesser offence? (poor Lt. Smith got screwed and bumped off the island so Rex could stay)

Basically the complaint is that Zeke says his neighbor Cletus done hid some sickly cows on his farm, then he didn't pay the right price for them thar boxes what makes the air cold in your house even though Zeke been installin' em for Cletus for 23 years (back when music was good and before all this rap nonsense and before them people was able to git one of their own elected so's they could start takin' our dern guns away), Then Cletus done talked trash about Zeke's yungun, told Zeke's yungun about the time Zeke was arrested for messin' around with that ol' girl who supposedly was one of them prosteetoots, or ladies of the evenin'. And anyway, that wasn't Zeke's fault no way cuz that girl was just askin' for a ride up to the Piggly Wiggly and Zeke didn't want to seem like he wasn't being a Christian or nuthin' so he gave her a ride but then he got hauled off to the pokey for nuthun'. Dern shame iffen you ask me.

Jesus, the only thing missing in this story is Boss Hog, Andy Griffith, and Arnold, the pig from Green Acres.

Ouch. The sheriff and shevitski used this guy big time and then backed over him with a big fat bus. They knew he was doing this but waited until after they took advantage of his "deals" - I mean thefts - before dropping the hammer on him. Sheriff - how's your AC running????
