View Full Version : Disgusting: Getting Paid While a Brother is Down and Out
It's a friggin shame that some of us in Blue would volunteer for Damien's guard duty and then request to be compensated for it. This is when we should be showing our best and bring out the good in us. What would the general public say if they knew we were getting paid for this. OUTRAGEOUS. People are loosing their homes and some are asking for OT or Comp to help a brother in need.
Absolutely disgusting!!!!
Their names should be posted for all to see, so we know who they are and can be dealt with appropriately. Shame on any of you who did this.
Well loose lips sink ships, it's already hitting the News-Press blogs:

My neighbor is a detective with the department and he told me an e-mail went out today from their union president, scolding some of their own officers for making a killing in OVERTIME to "stand guard" over a fallen police officer.
Maybe the Officers who got PAID OVERTIME to "volunteer" to stand guard over one of their own who was possibly dying, should donate the extra money they made to this fund. If not how can they ask us in the general public to help him out, when they are making money of such a tragedy.
God Forbid he dies. He'll be the first in the department's almost 40 year history.
That would make the money they made, blood money. Wow I hope the extra bucks allows them to buy a better mattress or pillow to sleep better at night.
It's a shame and according to my neighbor they are not happy with those who did this.

It seems that you know a bit more of the department history than a "neighbor"should. You must be awfly TIGHT with your neighbor.
I'm confused. He was injured in an auto accident and laid up in the hospital. Why does he need to be guarded by an officer? What exactly does "standing gaurd" for an injured officer entail? Providing emotional support for the officer and his family? Running errands for them? Screening everyone who comes to visit him?
Standing by Damien's bedside is a show of support from his law enforcement family; a show of support for his family; security of his room (mostly to manage flow of people to his room, restricted to medical staff and his family.) It is a vigil, a display of our support, hope & faith that he will make it through this.
To those who would read this, please realize that this is likely a very small number of selfish people who requested compensation. It has clearly been worded as voluntary to stand by Damien, and it should come as common sense that compensation should NOT be expected. Would anyone reasonably request compensation to attend Officer Widman's services, or any other officer lost in the line of duty? No. It is an honor to stand by a fellow officer in his or her time of need....no compensation necessary.
Stay safe, and keep your well-wishes and prayers coming for Damien, who now recovers in Miami close to his family.
Hey I'm a P.O. in another municipality determined to be hired by you guys....I'll stand guard for absoultly nothing, gladly! I'm off on weekends & mondays just say the word. It would've NEVER crossed my mind to request compensation. :cop:
Hey our motor unit is trying to get an update on his condition. Hope he is comfortable and progressing as best as can be expected.
Our prayers are still for him, his family and his family at your department.
