CORAL SPRINGS - A city police officer was shot by an armed robbery suspect who may now be holed up in a single-family home holding a mother and two children hostage, according to preliminary reports of the situation.

The injured officer was taken to North Broward Medical Center, in Deerfield Beach, about 7 p.m. but details of that officer's condition were not immediately available. Police officials also have not released the officer's identity.

Several on- and off-duty colleagues showed up at North Broward Medical Center tonight but declined to comment out of respect for the officer's family.

Sources said the officer is in his 20s and has been with the police department for a couple years. He was wearing a protective vest when he was wounded in the chest, but that the bullet may have pierced the body armor, the sources said.

Much of the search is centered on the 10000 block of Vestal Drive, in a neighborhood just west of University Drive and north of Ramblewood Drive.

Residents say the neighborhood, known as Maplewood, "looks like a war zone," as officers from the city and neighborhood agencies descend on the area for the insense search.

Authorities have set up a command post at the corner of Ramblewood and Coral Springs Drive to manage the crime scene, and officials plan to release additional details on the situation from there as the information becomes available.
