View Full Version : Message from the Officer 11/26/08

11-27-2008, 01:30 AM
I want to first thank everyone for your dedication to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The effort you put into eating at the EDR is what truly makes the police department a special place and I am honored to do what the council says. I ask all of you to wear your badge as a reflection of puppetry for the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Morale is low. If it even exists. Every officer knows there is no job security, you work at-will, you cater to the tribal members every beck and call. The command staff are secure with their six-figure income, bonuses, and pensions from prior departments. They do not worry nor care for a pension here, because they likely will not live long enough to fulfill the requirements (what was it, 35 years for 60% they talked about?), and even if they did, they do not worry of job security because they can live comfortably without this job. They have their retirement, you do not; being here you cannot say that in 20 to 25 years that "i do not need to worry about working anymore." They do not need the pension, they will not fight for it. You are on your own with an unstable 401k in an unstable economy, so work the details until you find something better. Otherwise, you will be the 75 year old guy bagging groceries at Publix once your 401k is dry, living on medicare and welfare.

Patches! What's with the change? Where was our opportunity to voice any kind of opinion of change? Wasn't the old design the original, first patch or something of that nature? The purpose of changing the departmental patch is to "strengthen our relationship with the community" as someone said. This is complete and utter bull, it only strengthens the bond between Chief and the council. If anything it is embarrassing and demoralizing. Miccosukee has some good horror stories, and SPD is on the same road they went down.

No single person from our command staff was at the funeral services of viewing of Officer Alex Del Rio. They were witnessed by half the department eating catered food with tribals members. What does this say to you? It tells you that no officer or their life is more important to the chief than the tribe.

There is no morale. People here live paycheck to paycheck unless they are Captain or above. There is no future and as such no one wants to apply here, even if only to be put through the academy for cheap state certification.

You people cry about detail hogs, escorting money trucks all day, going to coconut creek for a mere 12 hours. You cry about overbearing supervisors kicking back a report, that this person slept with that one or these people have a friendship outside of work.

Cry about the real issues. Worry about the lack of job security, a future here, worry about knowing no one will protect you if you make a slight mistake or you rub a tribal member the wrong way and file a complaint. Worry about living paycheck to paycheck until something happens and you can't work or get fired for whatever reason, and you have nothing to fall back on.

Enjoy ladies and gentlemen, at least until your luck runs out.

Sad but very true.

Nicely put. So, Moral Low... that's a definate! Although moral has shifted and changed through the past 36 months, plus, it is definately not getting any better. With change, comes adjustments, but nothing that is real here is being addressed. Pension situation is still a joke. Not to mention people who were "chosen" and not asked to be on a Pension Committee. People who had no desire or knowledge to be on the committee, and when asked to be removed to give an opportunity for someone with knowledge and the know how to assist with a pension, they were shot down and told to stay. Regardless of what is and is not happening with the pension, people are tired of hearing about how that Tribe has no money, but yet can spend a MILLION DOLLARS A SHOW for up to 8 shows for one act for HRL.

Speaking of money, I could think of several items the department needed before a patch overhaul. Radio system that's works would be nice.... oh wait, that's another item that's been on the list of things to improve for what 10? 15 years now?

The topic of shotguns were brought up again, with the same ol' story of taking a count of how many we have... How many times do we need to count them? Members of the department are willing to purchase their own, for their own safety, and yet no one can make a decision of what we can and can not use. But, we have 40 rounds to use to keep ourselves safe from the bad guys that know we are under staffed and out gunned. Times are hard everywhere, only takes about 5 minites to buy something off the streets to take one of us out in a second. People aren't stupid, that know the Tribe and the Casino's aren't broke.

Let's go back to the topic of moral. Yes, your right, not one of our Command Staff, Lt. or above, paid respect to Hollywood PD's Officer Alex Del Rio. It was nice to see Sgt. Maynard's squad take the time to pay their respects during the percession. Your right, with situations like that, you can't help but feel unappreciated, especially since it happened so close to the Hollywood / SPD jurisdiction. HPD and SPD may not always see eye to eye, but right is right, and lack of Command support for a fallen officer was sad and disheartning. Although their heart was in the right place, for the person who wrote the condolances to Hollywood PD on all of our behalf, it would have been nice if you proof read it first. As usual we look like tards.

Not for nothing, but it looks like you made a couple of "typos" yourself.

DID HOLLYWOOD GIVE LATCHFORD AN AWARD FOR THE SHOOTOUT WHEN CALVIN H. GOT SHOT. WE WILL ALWAYS WORK WITH HOLLYWOOD PD. WE NEED MORE OFFICERS IN HOLLYWOOD. THE DEPT. IS NOT LOOKING GOOD. WHY?

Why, oh why would Latchford get an award for the "shootout"? Please dazzle me with your all of your knowledge.

ONLY LATCHFORD CAN ANSWER THAT OR ANY ONE FROM HOLLYWOOD PD. I ACTUALLY THOUGHT HE DID AT ONE TIME IF I'M WRONG , SORRY. WHAT I DON'T KNOW WHO ACTUALLY HIRED LATCHFORD? HE IS LISTENING TO THE WRONG PEOPLE. WE NEED SOME POSITIVE FEEDBACK, HOW CAN WE GET THIS DEPT ON THE RIGHT TRACK ANY POSITIVE DIRECTION? THANKS. EVERYONE BE SAFE.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME STAND UP LEADERSHIP FOR CHRISTMAS. WE CAN'T LET ANYTHING GET US DOWN. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE THAT'S LEAVING. SOME OF YOU KNOW ME IF YOU NEED ANYTHING LET ME KNOW. I THINK THIS SITE HAS HELPED US SHARE SOME POSITIVE ISSUES. WE ARE TRYING TO GET MITCHELL (CHAIRMAN TO READ IT) SOME THINGS NEED TO BE LOOKED INTO.

I applaud any officer looking to leave this agency. Get out so we can get some dedicated and qualified individuals in positions that can make a difference for the department and the tribe. The Department is on the right track, buy into the system, work it, and maybe when the Tribe sees the results it wants you will see the results you want. The days of doing nothing and pretending like you are making a difference are over. This is a progressive law enforcement agency; you can make what you want of it. The Chief has an extraordinary vision that will make this department great.

12-01-2008, 04:35 AM
Look, Chief, we're not blind; we're not stupid; we are definitely not sycophants looking to do good in your eyes. Stop posting here trying to make yourself look good, and instead listen and make the changes necessary to slow the turn-over rate and get rid of our status as a "laughing stock" as it has been for so many years.

But then again, you're married to a tribal member, you get a good chunk of the dividends, you make six-figures... Why would you care about us?

VERY FEW OF THE BRASS CARE, 2 LT'S, 1 CAPT, AND A MAJOR HAVE NO IDEA, BUT THEY CAN'T HELP IT, THEY SAY YES TO EVERYTHING AND GIVE US NO DIRECTION. WE ARE NOT JUST SAYING THIS, IT'S TRUE. THE TRIBE HAS NO IDEA AND KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT POLICE WORK, HOWEVER, SOME TRIBAL MEMBERS RUN THIS DEPT. IT TAKES GUTS AND HEART TO BE CHIEF. WE WISH YOU LUCK WILL

If you get Will's name in the Christmas grab bag might I suggest a lint brush to remove all the wool that is being pulled over his eyes. Just a thought

WE AGREE, HE CAN'T MAKE A DECISION, HE NEEDS TO REACH OUTSIDE THE TRIBE AND ASK FOR HELP. WE SEE THINGS AND ISSUES THAT WILL DOES NOT SEE. MOST OF THE DEPT. IS IN FEAR AND THE BRASS HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO RUN A POLICE DEPT. I HAVE TALKED TO TRIBAL MEMBERS AND THEY SAY "WE OWN THE PD" THE DEPT. IS GOING TO BE A SECURITY TRIBAL DEPT. THE PEOPLE WHO RUN THE DEPT., HERE IN HOLLYWOOD, SAY WE ACTUALLY HAVE NO ARREST POWERS. THE STATE IS LOOKING INTO THIS BECAUSE ON TRIBAL LAND STATE LAW CAN'T BE ENFORCED. I HOPE THEY CAN RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM, IF THEY CAN'T BIA OFFICERS WILL COME IN AND THEY WILL BE THE NEW POLICE DEPT. GOOD LUCK.

Here is the problem with you complainers. Chief has made more decisions than any other chief has ever made. He might make a choice and not think twice about it because he has confidence but you don't see that. Many Many people seek outside opinion. Local businesses, corporate America, everyone. Honestly, what do you see? You have "talked to tribal members" OK, I have talked to Elvis, should you believe that too. Instead of using "scare tactics" on this blog why dont you take a Criminal Law class on case law instead of second guessing what is going on what MAY happen 50 years from now. It took Miccosukee what, 40 years to get Tribal Law. As far as Chief, he is the youngest Chief I have ever met, he must be doing something right. YA DIG.

Read the tribal constitution. The Seminole Tribe agreed to abide by Florida State Statute per contract. Therefore, all persons, tribal or not, must abide by FSS or they will go to jail. If you believe what the idiots tell you then you are an idiot as well.

THE TRIBE AGREED TO A LOT OF THINGS, HOWEVER, THEY DO NOT RECOGNIZE THIS STATE STATUTE. THE TRIBAL CONSTITUTION WAS AMENDED WHICH ELIMINATED A SECTION OF FLORIDA STATUTE. NO ONE HAS REALLY LOOKED INTO THIS, IT COULD ELIMINATE THE POLICE POWERS OFFICERS HAVE ON THE RESERVATIONS. DO SOME RESEARCH, TALK TO A LEGAL PERSON OR THE COUNCIL. YOU HAVE NO IDEA. IT'S SAD YOU CALL PEOPLE NAMES IT TELLS ME A LOT ABOUT YOU, NO NEED FOR THAT. WE CAN LEARN THINGS FROM THIS SITE, SO PLEASE KEEP IT CLEAN.

It's quite obvious you have learned nothing from this site. You need to do your homework. Please don't tell others to do research when you are the one who is mistaken. Apparently I hurt your feelings when I indirectly referred to you as an idiot. I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were a 12 year old girl. I will tone it down whenever I see your obnoxious ALL CAPS posts because I don't want you getting your mommy involved.

When you say "we" do you mean you and your mommy, or are you assuming that the rest of the PD agrees with you? After being on this site for awhile I can clearly see by many of your posts and the responses they receive that most people do not agree with you.

The release of records has absolutely nothing to do with enforcing the law or arrest powers! I need someone more intelligent to argue with. I'm off to the Quest Center.

You are no detective, that's for sure. Check FSS 119, genius.

THANKS, BUT STILL IT'S F.S. ANYWAY I HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT, JOBS ARE HARD TO FIND. AS A SOVEREIGN INDIAN TRIBE AND ALL IT'S SUBORDINATE GOVERNMENTAL UNITS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO THE JURISDICTION OF STATE COURT. AGAIN I HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT. I THINK THE BRASS IS WORKING ON THIS. I'LL DO SOME MORE RESEARCH. THIS SITE IS GOOD FOR ALL THIS FEEDBACK.

Actually, it's FSS "Florida State Statute". Nice try at the passive aggresiveness, though.

Listen you bumbling idiots, find something more entertaining to argue about. I mean, whats wrong with you. If you all are not happy why don't you just leave and go somewhere else. Yes the grass is greener, but you still have to cut it.

Obviously our conversation was entertaining enough for you to read the entire thing AND respond to it. I think you should take your own advice ("if you all are not happy why don't you just leave and go somewhere else") and go to a forum that better suits your special needs.

I'M DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE FSS THAT WE DISCUSSED. I THINK IT'S A GOOD SUBJECT TO TALK ABOUT, EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT OPINIONS. I WILL BRING UP SOME INTERESTING ISSUES BASED ON INFORMATION FROM FDLE AND LEGAL. THERE IS A LOT OF CONTROVERSY ON THE SUBJECT OF JURISDICTION. THE REASON WE CAN'T GET THE STATE RETIREMENT IS THE TRIBE HAS SAID THEY NEVER SIGNED N AGREEMENT TO THE FSS. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THIS COULD EFFECT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT. THIS IS A GOOD TOPIC. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT.

12-19-2008, 01:37 AM
This is a serious topic and should be looked into. We may not have any police powers. The Dept. could be discredited, it doesn't look good. I think the Lt. in Tampa is looking into it. He is concerned. Standby, the more we talk about this issue it gets scary. Good subject.

MISCONCEPTIONS & MISUNDERSTANDINGS OF FSS 285.16. I THINK INDIAN LAND IS CONSIDERED A SPECIAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT, BUT DOES THE TRIBE ACKNOWLEDGE IT? STATE LAWS ARE ENFORCED ON TRIBL LAND. OTHER AGENCIES CAN ENFORCE THESE LAWS.

WHO CARES!!!!! If they screw up, they go to jail. Or is that too complicated for you. Forum sounds like a bunch of law school drop outs.Instead of talking about FSS 285, why dont you be more concerned on the laws and training that will be used day to day
