Prosecutors not pursue charges against sheriff's son-in-law

TAVARES - Prosecutors announced today they would not pursue domestic-violence charges against the son-in-law of Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary.

Assistant State Attorney Bill Gladson said the decision to abandon the criminal case against Alan Brooks, 24, was prompted by the wishes of his wife of two years, Brittany Beary Brooks.

Alan Brooks, who works for his father-in-law as a deputy, agreed to continue counseling with his wife, who also withdrew a petition for a protection order that she had sought after a door-breaking quarrel at the couple's home in Mount Dora on Sept. 20, defense lawyer Michael Graves said.

The argument erupted over cats, chores and finances.

Graves said the couple's in-laws, including the sheriff, have attempted to help them work out their problems.

No one was injured in the early-morning domestic squabble during which husband and wife shoved one another. Alan Brooks told Mount Dora police that he broke through the bathroom door because his wife had locked herself inside and he was concerned that she would hurt herself.
