JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A JSO officer is recovering in Shands after being shot by a man on the Northside. The unknown man was shot and killed.

JSO Director Dwain Senterfitt says that Officer C.A. Sames and his partner D.M. Ostertagg were on routine patrol at 25th and Barnett.

Officer Sames approached a man described as "suspicious" to talk to him.

That's when they say the suspect opened fire on Officer Sames hitting him once in the upper part of his body.

The officer is still in serious condition. JSO tells First Coast News that the officer is talking and with his family recovering.

A steady stream of fellow officers pulled into Shands Friday night, including a Florida Highway Patrol trooper and a deputy from Clay County.

The man who opened fire on the officer was fatally shot by both Officer Sames and Ostertagg.

JSO does not know why the man opened fire. His identity has not been released.

JSO says that this is the third Officer shot in the past year and the 19th police involved shooting.
