Boynton Beach police officer shot 'recovering nicely'

The 21-year-old man who shot at a Boynton Beach police officer Sunday afternoon has been out of prison less than two months and has an arrest record stretching back to age 11, Boynton Beach Police Chief Matthew Immler said during a Monday morning news conference.

Tarvis Merrell Wilson, who listed a Boca Raton address, fired three times at Boynton Beach police Sgt. Richard McNevin, after McNevin tried to grab Wilson following a two-county police chase that ended in Delray Beach, Immler said.

McNevin, 37, was hit once in the bulletproof vest and didn't suffer any serious injuries. He was released from the hospital Monday morning.

"He's recovering nicely," Immler said. "He'll be fine."

Wilson remained hospitalized with gunshot wounds at Delray Medical Center, his condition unknown.

Three officers, including a Delray Beach officer and two Boynton Beach officers, fired at Wilson, wounding him an unknown number of times.

Wilson was released from the Florida prison system June 28, where he had been serving time for cocaine possession and fleeing to elude a police officer, records show.

He is now charged with multiple counts, including the attempted murder of a police officer. Immler said Wilson demonstrated he is an extreme danger to the community.

"People like Mr. Wilson are very dangerous," Immler said. "I'm hoping he doesn't come back to the community."

The chase began after two separate incidents Sunday afternoon in Boynton Beach. One was an attempted drive-by shooting in the 200 block of Southwest Sixth Avenue, but Wilson's 9 mm semiautomatic apparently jammed. The other was reported minutes later, as shots fired near Woolbright Road and Seacrest Boulevard. by a suspect matching the earlier description. A caller told police that the shooter was driving a green Nissan Altima that headed southbound on Interstate 95.

Wilson first headed into Delray Beach on Southwest 11th Avenue, south of Atlantic Avenue. He then returned to I-95, heading south, police said.

Wilson got off the highway at Sample Road and Hillsboro Boulevards, and tried to take evasive maneuvers, police said. The Broward Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol troopers joined Boynton Beach police in the chase, and Wilson got back on I-95, heading north and got off in Delray Beach, police said.

Delray Beach police used tire-deflation devices to stop the car, said Officer Jeff Messer, department spokesman. Wilson jumped out of his car on Southwest 12th Avenue and ran through backyards, apparently trying to reach his mother's house nearby, police said. Police chased him on foot.

"The guy got out of his car, and police told him to freeze," said witness James Phillips, who lives in the neighborhood. "He just turned around and started shooting."

Wilson then started running again, according to police, and crossed Southwest 11th Avenue, ran behind a home and shot at the officers again. Two Boynton Beach officers and one from Delray Beach returned the fire, hitting the man multiple times, police said. "All of the officers shot him," Immler said.

Officers recovered a Glock handgun from Wilson. Dozens of law enforcement officers soon surrounded the neighborhood in the shooting's aftermath.

Abe Wooten was attending a service of Church of the Living God on Southwest 11th Avenue in Delray Beach when he heard the commotion.

"We heard a lot of gunfire, then looked out. There were sirens everywhere," Wooten said.

Great job to all involved. I'm glad to hear the officer that got shot is doing well. Too bad the scum bag didn't croak, he could have saved us the cost of a trial.
