MAYPORT, Fla. -- A person police described as a suspect in a homicide was shot and killed by an officer during a foot chase through Mayport early Tuesday morning.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Rick Graham said police were keeping the suspect under surveillance at the Courtyards Apartments on America's Cup Circle just after 4 a.m. when the suspect began to run. Graham said that as police were chasing the suspect on foot, one police officer drew his weapon and fired several shots.

Graham said it was not known yet if the suspect had a weapon.

The suspect was transported by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died. No police officers were injured in the pursuit or shooting.

"It's part of the job we do. It's a dangerous job and there's some dangerous people out there in the community that choose to challenge our officers. Our officers are trained and willing to do what they have to do to protect themselves and protect other people," Graham said.

Police have not identified the person shot and killed or said which homicide the suspect may have committed.

This is the 16th police-involved shooting in Jacksonville in 2008 and the third in the past 10 days.
