We all know that the primary duties and assignments for troopers compared to deputies usually differ greatly.

For a trooper this typically includes answering calls for crashes and proactively assisting DAV's and doing traffic enforcement. While a trooper may do many other things, these appear to be the primary "must be done" items. According to the FHP website, trooper base salary is $33,977.04 w/o CAD. Using basic calculations, that puts the rate at $17.70 per hour (33,977.04/12)/160

For a deputy, "must be done" duties typically include answering calls for service involving varying issues like civil complaints, assault/battery, thefts/robberies/burglaries, domestics, baker acts, frauds, warrants, suspicious people/cars, narcotics, juveniles, etc. Many of these result in written reports and/or arrest. They can also proactively perform building checks, stop suspicious people or do traffic enforcement, time permitting. The SO where I reside pays deputies $15.09 per hour with no step plan. All available OT for them is capped at their standard 1.5 OT rate. Also, all outside employment goes through the SO and the deputy is paid their standard OT rate.

Just food for thought info from a large central Florida SO.

What SO is that at $15.09 an hour??? It's gotta be a small rural county!

Volusia Sheriff's Office Salary
http://www.volusia.org/sheriff/Become%2 ... salary.htm (http://www.volusia.org/sheriff/Become%20a%20Deputy/salary.htm)

Reserve Deputy.......................$11.43/hr - $15.84/hr.
Deputy II.................................$14.79/hr - $22.63/hr.
Corporal................................. 17.03/hr - $26.08/hr.
Sergeant................................ $17.03/hr - $26.08/hr.

Salary prior to the 2% raise. Now deputies are at $15.09/Hr. The "salary ranges" are of no use as everyone is at the minimum. Deputy II is a regular deputy and their are no Corporals anymore. Department has about 464 sworn (larger then Seminole 321 or Osceola 336, and nearly the same as Brevard 474).

State Troopers make more than Deputies?

Welcome to Volusia County. I am sure the Troopers can also smoke and not do a yearly physical fitness test.

You are correct.

Hooray for Volusia county. Go to the troopers web site. If they want misery they should come here.

For the extreme hiring requirements, high level of training required (after employment), large work load and stress of follow ups; not to mention the normal dangers of police work like personal safety, violent encounters, high speed crashes, civil/criminal liability - VCSO should be paying a lot more. I think a large exodus is about to occur.

Quality post. For a while there it seemed like everybody was treading water. Now it seems like we are sinking. And the solution (answer) from the 4th floor is the courthouse.....

What made you guys go with such a low paying, no step plan agency? I ask that respectfully everyone. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel in regards to pay or step plans?

10-01-2008, 01:52 PM
There might be light at the end of the tunnel...but you cannot drive your patrol vehicle there. No 10-75 forever.

Driving SO vehicles while off duty...
Just another benefit cut out from our already ridiculously low salary.

But look at this way. We get three days of deputy refresher training coming up (that Lieutenants and above do not have to do). A no tobacco policy. A physical agility test. And 2 percent.

No light to be seen. Not even talk of a step plan. And the Teamsters union is so busy arguing with themselves - they can not agree on anything.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. It is a train. At least we have a quality County Manager who is also an Honorary Deputy to lead us.

Hm, I havent heard about all these negatives for working for VCSO. That's a shame because I wanted to try and join the SO after I get my BA. I don't want to join FHP much because I don't think I'd like traffic work as much as the diversity SO deputies have.

What should I do?

Come on over to the FHP messageboard and find out what honor, integrity, and professionalism are before you make up your mind.

I dont see many happy things being said there either.

Any updates recently on pay scales being added, new benefits, etc.?

VCSO is still my department of choice in the area. I just hope going to Daytona State to get my LE diploma wont hurt my chances.
