A police officer injured in a vehicle accident was taken to the hospital after rescuers cut away the roof of his car and pulled him out Wednesday evening, authorities said.

Capt. Dexter Williams, a 15-year veteran of the Police Department, was airlifted to Memorial Regional Hospital in serious condition, officials said.

Though a fire department spokesman said Williams may require surgery, police officials said he was talking and alert. He did not say what kind of surgery he might undergo.

The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. Williams was at a stop sign on Corporate Way about to turn right onto Miramar Parkway when a westbound 2005 Ford Taurus on that road lost control and slammed into the marked patrol car's passenger side, police said.

Officials are investigating the cause of the accident.
