City commissioners last month voted against giving themselves a 6 percent raise on Tuesday.

The raise would have included both a 3.5 percent annual cost-of-living adjustment and a 2.5 percent merit increase.

Mayor Steven Feren and Commissioner Joseph Scuotto earn $37,185. Scuotto earns a longevity bonus because he's been on the commission since 1997. The rest of the commissioners earn $36,279. The salary increase will still be given to the 126 city employees in management or supervisory positions, retroactive to Jan. 1 and costing the city $13,180. According to the city's web site, there are 1,300 employees.

The commission decided to forgo the increase because of the tight budget year, said Commissioner Sheila Alu.

"It would be difficult to look taxpayers in the face when you take a raise but cut back on city services," Alu said.
