That was the kind of obstacle four Tallahassee police officers in the traffic unit faced at a motorcycle rodeo competition and training seminar last weekend in Charleston, S.C.

"When you brush a cone, you're done," Officer John Pretti said about the obstacles.

Officer Tim Clark placed first in the intermediate competition. In the expert competition, Officer Allan Morris placed second and Pretti placed third.

Officer Zach Lyons competed in the novice competition.

"It's not easy," said Lyons, who competed for the first time. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, to be honest."

They competed against about 75 riders from more than 15 law-enforcement agencies across the country.

The officers paid for the trip out of their pockets by working off-duty security detail. The competition is invaluable, they say, because they pick up tips from other agencies. One year, they learned about the hands-free radios that they now use.
