STUART - A 43-year-old Port St. Lucie man returning from the Bahamas on Sunday left about $50,000 worth of cocaine in his boat's wake near the St. Lucie Inlet, according to an arrest report.

After watching suspect Timothy Edward Dawson bend over the side of his boat about 10:30 a.m., a member of the U.S. Coast Guard retrieved the cocaine from a shaving bag bobbing nearby, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office report.

"The canvas shaving bag was unzipped and upside-down in the water," according to the report. "The bag was found to contain a plastic City Market grocery bag with two vacuum-sealed kilograms of suspect cocaine."

No other boats were nearby and Dawson was alone on his vessel, according to the report.

During questioning with Martin County Sheriff's Office detectives at Sandsprit Park, Dawson denied ownership of the cocaine and said he had merely traveled to the Bahamas to fish and work, according to the report. Nevertheless, he gave the detectives additional reason to suspect him when he mentioned shopping at City Market in the Bahamas, according to the report.

A detective charged Dawson with trafficking in cocaine and booked him into the Martin County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
