The University of Central Florida wants tailgating fans to stop drinking immediately after kickoff beginning with this fall's football season.

The decision, confirmed by UCF officials, was made after a committee looked closely at what took place during the school's first season.

Athletic department spokesman Joe Hornstein said officials sought to make the campus more "fan friendly" and safe when they updated game day rules.

"We want people to enjoy the game once kickoff starts….not to be outdoors engaging in alternative behaviors," said Hornstein. "I don't know that there was a definitive cause [for the decision]."

Students will still be able to drink inside UCF restaurants that serve alcohol.

This is a verbatim copy of UCF's game day regulations for alcoholic beverage consumption. The new regulation is in bold:

Alcoholic Beverages

Alcoholic beverages ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED from being brought inside Bright House Networks Stadium. No alcoholic beverages are authorized in the stadium on game day (except in the stadium suites and club lounge). Persons with alcoholic beverages may be ejected from the stadium. No refunds will be granted in these cases.

The University of Central Florida's drug and alcohol policy is set forth at: UCF Golden Rules. This policy states that the sale, service, possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages shall comply with state and federal laws. This policy shall remain in effect for all home football games. However, city and county ordinances and university regulations relating to open containers shall not be applicable or enforced from 7:00 AM until game start, thereby permitting alcoholic beverages to be consumed during these authorized hours only by persons 21 years of age or older. This policy only applies to the main UCF campus and not the surrounding area.

No public sale or distribution of alcohol is authorized on campus (except in permanent dining establishments). Kegs, glass containers and beer funnels are not authorized on campus.

The following activities are prohibited at all times:

(1) any rapid, excessive or irresponsible consumption of alcohol beverages.

(2) drinking contests or games or any other activities which involve the rapid and/or excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages

Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited by persons younger than 21 years of age. Anyone consuming alcohol must be prepared to show proof that he or she is 21 years or older.
