Just when you thought it could not get worse than it already is, the new schedule pops up.
It’s not enough that politicians outside of our chain of command make decisions which negatively impact our lives, now it’s also coming from within. Are the top brass and politicians competing to bring this agency down?
With all the issues this department has, we did not need this. The new schedule has brought us to a new low. Going from 12’s to 8’s adds 78 work days to the year. Assuming the average officer uses 2 gallons of gas to get to and from work, that’s an extra 156 gallons a year we each need to purchase. At current fuel prices that’s around $600, which will only increase as prices rise. The added round trip commute for those extra 78 days equals about 156 hours (2 pay periods worth of time).
Great timing guys! With summer coming and the school year ending, many of us will also have child care issues associated this brainless schedule. The increased number of work days plus lack of weekend days off will certainly take more money out of our hard working, dedicated officers pockets. The cost of babysitter or even fuel used to transport kids to a relative’s house will add up for those extra 78 days. Our current schedule gives even the newest policeman part of the weekend off. Why ruin that?
Another issue that makes you go Hmmmmmm. Does it make sense that a veteran officer with nearly 20 years of dedicated service to the tribe will likely end up with weekdays off? Is it sensible that an officer with a fraction of that time has weekends off? Why can’t the most senior sergeant can‘t pick day shift. How the heck does the most junior sergeant end up having Friday, Saturday, Sunday off? Where is the incentive to stick around?
This schedule will increase our stress level, which is a proven assault on our immune systems. This will certainly result in increased sick outages. Factor in that the majority of the department has applied to other agencies and there goes more wasted sick time. A rotating work week with partial weekend days off is too valuable to abandon. They may have created the perfect storm.
This schedule will increase our stress level and stress has been proven to weaken the immune system. This will certainly result in increased sick outages. Couple that with the majority of the department having applied to other agencies and they will be determined to chew up their sick time. The lack of weekend days off. They have created the perfect storm.
I think good leadership understands their people and makes every effort to improve working conditions. We have been on a downward spiral for a while. Even the little things like plastic forks and paper plates. How much of our budget did that chew up? They are costing each and everyone of us more money for fuel with this dumb new schedule, but I guess that’s O.K..
I just can’t fathom how our top brass thought this could be a good thing for the department.
