BENSON'S IDEAS

Bensons next idea will put a ring of safety around USF by tripling the money next year for AB he plans that every 10 feet a golf cart manned by a “Special Agent” of AB will ring the perimeter of the Campus.

Its just a joke folks, but I’m sure an idea like this along with quite a few others, could have been discussed at one of “Doc” Bensons brainstorming sessions. All the while the security report (most likely used as a coffee cup tray as to not leave a ring on his desk) sits ignored. “What is this nonsense” Bruce could be heard yelling at his underlings, “Properly fund a Police Department???” “I want to build gates at less than 6 of the 17 entrances, I want air raid sirens, I want lights… big spotlights that I can flash at criminals, I want detectors that detect things, Quick call the media I think they need to know we’re concerned I, I, I, …..I need another nap I’m pooped ”.

We can all laugh but really its kind of sad

Smoke and mirrors folks that’s all it is. They just have to show they are doing something. They will stand there and pose at these gates all smiles, backslapping and hand shaking. Benson will add this to his resume on how he secured a "Criminals Playground” and "saved the cheerleader" from the evil urban dwellers that surrounded our peaceful Campus. Keep this in mind, when something does happen here and I'm sure its just a matter of time, the big finger of USF will be pointing at our small understaffed PD and drag us through the mud.

A few new cars (which replace cars that should have been scraped anyway) and new light bars on old cars, is not my idea of properly funding a Police Department.

1. That motorhome in our back yard? WTF
2. SWAT? We have TTPD, TPD, and HCSO all around us with real swat teams.
3. Have to supply this TRT, so all the thousands of dollars spent there (machine guns, baseball catcher outfits, this ballistic armor you speak of, bags for it all, oh, and all the rail "toys" you can fit on an M4)
4. Sneaky 2500 dollar bonus checks to command staff (yes it did happen, and long before the PBA's checks went out)
5. New, and very expensive light bars for all the cars. Really did we need them?
6. The Chief's Harley, well the picture does look good on the website

Ok, so we have a few new cars, guess what? THEY REPLACED THE OLD SHITTY ONES!!!

In response to the above post, be advised that most of our TRT gear (including armor) is having to come out of our own pockets due to budget constraints. I'm not rolling in the dough, but I do this so I don't have to stand around with my thumb in my ass, while someone calls a "real" swat team to do my job for me. I could care less about "rail toys" for my M4 or fancy body armor. What I do care about is the perception, even within our own agency, that we are a third rate joke of a police department who should leave the real work to the surrounding bigger agencies. Yes we're small, yes we're underfunded, but this crap has got to stop.

Everybody is quick to complain that we're not up to the standards of HCSO of TPD, but when we try to raise the bar at all, everybody says we're wasting money.

Sorry if I sound a bit offended, but I'm kind worn out from everyone, internal and external, sh%tting on our department.

If you have to buy your own armor because of budget constraints, you sir, are not reading the clear message that USF is sending.

Your post makes it VERY CLEAR that we ARE a 3rd rate PD.

We are a UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENET. Not a City or County PD. Why do we constantly have to take Viagra to play with the big boys?? And I’m sorry if you can’t pound your chest and stand in file with the rest of the boys, all the guns, toys, and tshirts in the world will not change our place in the LEO world.

That being said, I didn’t sign on for this ride, the North Sector, or DUI check points. We are campus cops, and it’s time we started acting like them.

Lets be real, the real problem is people like you that get insulted when you get called out for playing cop. We are here to serve our students, staff, and residents. If you want to pound your chest, then go apply with the city or the county. My point is that you and the chief need to realize that we are not here to do traffic on fletcher, we are here as campus officers. Nobody really gives a shit how many DUIs you got last month when the citizens we are here to protect are being robbed while you are off campus running traffic. Really, thats almost like winning a small lottery..., you get $160,000K for enforcing things told to you to do, and adding a few unrealistic ideas of your own that will be ignored. It's really funny how a a guy that has never worked the streets, but somehow managed to become an office boy; shops on all the internet sites all day for BS police stuff, and manages to get the Chief to buy mostl the BS equipment and come out like a guy doing a great job for his pay. Vehicles set up with stuff that don't even need that equipment? But, it is impresive and good internet shopping.

Funny thing here... I took a gander at the light bars after this posting and come to find out the new FANCY lightbars are actually around $300 LESS than the old strobe units that they were placing on the cars prior...

Most people in the Department don't look at the Galls Police Equipment website as a form of "porn" as some do, so most of us are not familiar what the price of a lightbar is.

Please do something with the security guards in the golf carts, they are out of control writing improper tickets and their attitudes are a terrible represenation of your officers and staff. The only people on campus in golf carts are writing parking tickets. Not one of us writes parking tickets, nor does AB.

Now......I did hear a nice story about an AB guard that got into a 22 with a patron that had a disabled hangtag, and the idiot guard told her/him they could not park in a disabled spot.

I don't know how AB has time to "secure" our campus when they are checking out girls in Greek, calling us about skateboarders, and catching kids making out in their cars.....

What part of this clown is either AB or parking services didn't you understand. If you see ANYONE on a golf cart, and it isn't an off duty event (flag football, foot race, concert), then they either work for AB or parking. Like a prior "guest" said, AB is nothing more than walking cell phones. They can NOT write any tickets, detain, or even make contact with anyone on campus.

The spell check experts are on many forums and usually post when the original post is right on the money. It's their little way to strike back when they have nothing contradict the truth.

Normally I would agree with you. But this time you're incorrect as to the correcting poster. The person who wrote the grammatically screwed up post should be ashamed of him/herself for making those mistakes. No one expects anybody to be perfect. But to have that many faux pas' in one post is an embarrassment to us all. I would hate to be a member of the public reading a report written so poorly.

I've got one more year of retirement from where I work, I and was looking at USF to continue in my law enforcement career. I still have a lot of years left to dedicate to this job. I would like to take advantage of the free education. But from what I've heard and read, the PD is a mess over there. I graduated from USF 12 yrs ago. I thought it would be a good place to work, but not so sure from reading these posts. What is going on with the security guards being hired and this Benson overseeing the PD? Is the Univeristy PD going to be a stable job in the future?

Well, all I can say is there's plenty of "sense" over here and the brass try to get 'er done but the university administration keeps having "ideas". Just imagine your city or county administration, you know, like a city manager, mayor or something like that is constantly spawning new ideas to do your job better than you ever dreamed of doing! When their not doing that they are dreaming up ways to cut the budget. I wish I could say they are psychotic but its much worse. They are "business people"!

As far as working here, it isnt bad, in fact its as good as you make it. The chief seems to get us good equipment in spite of the university. Let him deal with the headaches and power politics crap...thats what he is paid for.

The answer to that is different depending who you ask. We do have openings but, I could not tell you for sure if USF will fill them. There is a Major Budget problem when it comes to "needed" things but there seems to be no problem spending money on really stupid things by the USF Admin.

Police services are not a priority of the USF Admin. Good people to work with but, the level of Negitivity is going up quite quickly. Even people that fought it off for a while have begun to show from the wear.

So, in regards to working here, put in the application and see what happens. Sorry but that about all we can say right now.
