Colleges' police budgets appear safe

State university officials are asking schools not to cut police department or safety budgets as they search for ways to trim an estimated $113 million from their current-year spending plans.

The Board of Governors, which oversees Florida's 11 public universities, will discuss campus policing needs during a workshop Wednesday in Tallahassee.

But Chancellor Mark Rosenberg recently sent a letter to university presidents saying that, in light of the random shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University during the past year, he expects all university campus public safety departments to be "held harmless" in budget reductions.
"We all acknowledge that there is nothing more important to each of us than the security and the safety of our students, faculty and staff," Rosenberg wrote.

Florida Atlantic University, in a memo to staff and students this week, said campus safety was the only area not being reviewed for cuts this year.

Several programs, such as locks on classroom doors and a reverse 911 system, are receiving additional money.

FAU's police department also has requested $45,000 for equipment and training in "active shooter intervention."

Statewide, universities said they need $590,476 to prepare for random shooting situations.

From tragedy comes triumph. It sucks, but its sooo true! I am almost happy to say "liability" worked for the PD's.

Roberts is Ft Lauderdale's chief:

Fort Lauderdale officers earn $49,393 starting pay, and after five years hit the maximum $63,897. They asked for 31.5 percent raises over three years and an annual pension check increase; the city's latest offer is 10 percent over two years.

"They deserve the best contract, they really do," Roberts said. "They work hard. They deserve to be up there, and everybody's working in that direction."
