MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) ― It may be a case of modern day technology that just doesn't do the job as well as what was used in the old days, but for Miami Beach Police officers, their radio system could be a matter of life or death.

The Miami Beach Police Department had installed a new digital Motorola radio system meant to be better than the analog system they had, but after the system crashed, officers have reverted to using the old system instead, simply because it appears to be more reliable. According to the police union, this could pose a dangerous situation because under the old system there are certain "dead spots" where officers cannot make or receive calls.

Bobby Jenkins of the Fraternal Order of Police thinks it presents a threat.

"It's an officer safety issue," said Jenkins. "It could be that one time that the officer needs help; they don't get it."

The system was Implemented in 2003, and cost $1 million. It was supposed to allow dispatchers, police and firefighters to communicate on more secure digital channels with no dead spots.

Jenkins said the City of Miami Beach has been trying to fix the problem.

"We'd like to see Motorola step it up and fix the problem," he said.

Motorola says they are aware of the problem, but they haven't offered a timetable for when the problem will be fixed.

Looks like BH is still the PIO, only stirring the pot again. Chief you need to take care of this guy and put him somewhere he can't get information. Its obvious he is the leak.

WTF are you talking about?!?!? This was not a leak, it was a press conference called by the FOP to put pressure on Motorola. Please crawl back under your rock with all of your conspiracy nut friends and leave the important stuff to the adults. There are more important things happening around here for you to spend your time name-calling.

Dang! Now's when the FOP does a Press Release. If it's such a concern why did it take so long?

If my memory serves me correctly, didn't BJ complain when it went digital also. Can he make up his mind already? Does he want digital or analog?

Remember when there were three channels and you had to ask the PEU person what channel we were on?

i think he wants, like most of us, a system that works properly...

I think the problem is certain Dispatchers more than the radio system.

This can't be BJ. The spelling is too good.
