Florida's Police Chiefs Endorse Attorney General's CyberSafety Initiative

~ Police chiefs commend McCollum's commitment to CyberSafety education ~

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Attorney General Bill McCollum today accepted the official endorsement of the Florida Police Chiefs Association (FPCA) in support of his CyberSafety Education initiative. Launched at the start of this school year, the initiative is taking the Attorney General's CyberSafety program into middle and high schools statewide. The endorsement was announced this morning at the FPCA’s mid-winter training conference where the Attorney General was a featured speaker.

"The support of Florida's Police Chiefs will be instrumental in this endeavor as we reach out to Florida’s communities and especially the school children," said Attorney General Bill McCollum. "Our goal is to empower students to recognize, avoid and report instances of predators attempting to exploit them over the internet."
Designed to empower children to use the internet safely, the CyberSafety program combines real-life stories and examples to help students identify the ways they could be victimized online. Students receive information about internet dangers and the tactics used today by online predators. They also learn what constitutes a cybercrime and how to report it to the appropriate authorities.

“We no longer can be just concerned about protecting our children from predators in the real world, but must make sure that we are protecting our children from predators in the cyber world,” said Juno Beach Police Chief H.C. “Skip” Clark II, President of the Florida Police Chiefs Association. "The Florida Police Chiefs praise the Attorney General for recognizing that awareness and training are some of the strongest tools we can provide our children to teach them how to protect themselves from online predators.”

An open line of communication between the students and the victim advocates is strongly encouraged during the CyberSafety presentations to give the opportunity for private disclosure. The Attorney General’s victim advocates also offer referral resources and counseling to any child who discloses victimization. Reports of cybercrime are referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency for investigation. To date, more than 23,000 students have received the CyberSafety presentation and approximately 1,400 have disclosed some type of victimization, including online solicitation and receipt of obscene material. More information is available online at http://www.safeflorida.net/safesurf.

Earlier today, Attorney General McCollum announced another significant achievement in the fight for cybersafety with an agreement reached by Florida, 48 other states and the District of Columbia with MySpace to further enhance the safety of the popular social networking site. The agreement includes many design and policy changes that will better protect youth from harmful images and unwanted contact from adults and culminates nearly two years of discussions between MySpace and the Attorneys General.

I just saw the ad on Peoplefirst for a Cybercrime position in Lauderdale. Is there a unit in Ft. Myers? Is it fully staffed?
