View Full Version : VOTE NO
looks like the contract that received so much praise by the elected officials fell short of its promises.
whatever happened to the 9-7-7 raise?
speaking for myself, since im not topped out i will only get 4% which will only hardly make up for the last two cost of living raises that i missed. the PBA, mainly Sisson keeps mentioning the step increase that we weill get. the step increase is not a raise. a raise is something you get at the moment such as the 4% upon ratification. i havent heard mention of another 4% or 5% next year or the year after...unless i misread something which is entirely possible due to the excited delirium i was in upon hearing of the 4% raise.
during the negotiations if you asked one of the officers what numbers they were asking for in a raise they would not tell anyone. the reason for this is that they werent asking for squat. the raise they were asking for basically got us back to even with the cola that we missed out on. since we get no retro pay on the "raise" ,we once again missed out on more money especially if you are in a position to make overtime or work holidays. folks you will never recover that money that you missed out on due to this. maybe your PORF will make up for this...nevermind thats gone too... the city mismanaged this and was never held accountable.
all i can say is put in all you can to your deffered comp as this is all you will have. our retirement will probably be pissed away down the road the same way the porf was.
the elected officials got so focused on the 25 and out that they over looked the other items.
ever wonder why the city all of a sudden agreed to the contract out of the blue? the reason for this is because the 25 and out doesnt hurt their pocket but the raises do......hence the small amount of pennies that we just agreed to.
if your happy with 4% then vote yes to ratify this contract...
on a good note i guess the shift bid is staying the same... great job PBA.
I WILL BE VOTING NO UNTIL THE UNION GETS IT RIGHT. IF THE UNION CANT GET IT RIGHT THEN WE NEED TO REVOTE ON THE ELECTED OFFICIALS. IF THAT DOESNT WORK THEN WE NEED A NEW UNION.
great post..
ill vote no as well..
we should of given up all raises or anything else and went with a 20 and out...since we screwed ourselves anyway and added 5 more years to a would be 20 and out..
heck even auburndale p.d. has a 20 and out....
its a sad day when lpd is below auburndale....
pencil me in for 30 years please..
Before you start making all these accusations and assumptions you need to attend the ratification meetings. There all your questions will be answered. Nick, Jody, Checo, Dave Doty and Mike Link are very accessible and will give the answers to all your questions.

I spoke with an APD officer several weeks ago and at that time they did not have a 20 and out.
Bartow PDs city commission has to approve the current contract and they will have a 20 and out (and the ability to go to drop after 20).
However, BPDs pay is much lower than LPDs.
LPD can do much better. Food for thought: Remember in Dirty Harry when Callahan asks the robber "Do ya feel lucky....well do ya...?" You gotta ask yourself the same about this proposed contract....
STACY,
WITH ALL DUE RESPECT , I BELEIVE DUE TO THE LATEST EMAILS BETWEEN SEVERAL UNION MEMBERS AND OFFICERS, THE OFFICERS(JODY) HAVE PROPOSED WHAT THEY THINK WILL PASS, NOT WHAT THEY THINK WE WANT/NEED.
A 4% RAISE IS RIDICULOUS. LIKE THE OTHER POSTER SAID, IT BARELY BREAKS US EVEN.
ANYWAYS, CONGRATS STACY ON BECOMING A NEW OFFICER. AT LEAST IT WAS DONE FAIR THIS TIME UNLIKE LAST TIME.
THE CITY DIDNT AGREE WITH US BECAUSE ITS A GREAT CONTRACT.....THINK ABOUT IT..
IT LOOKS LIKE THE ELECTED OFFICERS HAVE BEGAN THEIR CAMPAIGN TO PUSH THIS CONTRACT ON ITS OFFICERS.
THE MEETING I WAS AT TODAY WAS A JOKE. THERE WERE MORE QUESTIONS THAT ANSWERS. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT THE ELECTED OFFICERS WERE IN THE DARK WHEN IT CAME TO THE NEGOTIATION AND WHAT THE CONTRACT REALLY INVOLVED.
FOLKS IF YOU VOTE YES FOR THE CONTRACT THEN YOU GIVE UP ANY CHANCE FOR A RAISE FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS AFTER YOUR SOON TO BE 4% RAISE. ALSO THE UNION IS TRYING TO THROW US A ONE TIME $680.00 CHECK IN ORDER TO SHUT US UP ABOUT THE PROMISE OF A 9-7-7 RAISE THAT WAS OBVIOUSLY NEVER ASKED FOR.
KEEP AN OPEN MIND WHEN THEY COME TO YOUR BRIEFINGS AND MEETINGS. ALSO KEEP IN MIND THAT ALL OF THESE ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE CLOSE TO RETIREMENT AND COULD REALLY CARE LESS ABOUT THE NEW PEOPLE, I.E. RAISES.
AS FOR THE RETIREMENT I HAVE NO IDEA WHO IS GOING TO MANAGE IT OR IF THEY ARE QUALIFIED. BASED ON THE EMAILS BACK AND FORTH IT APPEARS THAT THIS CONTRACT IS THE GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD.
THE CITY IS HAPPY AND CHUCKLING AT US NOW. THIS CONTRACT IS LIKE A PLANE OUT OF GAS, THE ONLY THING WE KNOW IS THAT WERE ALL GONNA END UP AT THE SAME CRASH SITE.
THANKS FOR THE 4%, ILL GO BUY A NEW PAIR OF SHOES WITH THAT $100 A CHECK BEFORE TAXES.
P.S. THE CITY HAS ALREADY ASKED WHEN ARE WE GOING TO VOTE ON THIS CONTRACT... THIS SHOULD BE A CLUE. THEY DONT WANT US ASKING TOO MANY QUESTIONS OR MAKING CHANGES...
CITY 1
UNION 0
I have heard several different things, but nothing as low as 4%. If this is it for everybody topped out or not, then you bet your a$$ I'll vote NO and so had everybody else. How bout one of our PBA Reps...care to comment ?
How bout you Stacy....your a straight shooter, what are we looking at.
The topped out people and the low end people get 9% at ratification. Within the next year we get another 5% and whatever the rest of the city gets for a COLA in October. The middle guys got their 5% merit in march, they get another 4% at ratification and another 5 % in March or when their evaluation is in 08, depending on where the middle guys are in the payscale their is an additional step that they get when they top out (which is 5% or 2.5% per step). The new top out pay for officers is $60,800 which is above median for our area/department size.
You guys are starting to become the joke of central Florida. Come on over to Tampa when you've had enough.
WELL IN CASE YOU HAVENT NOTICED, YOUR MERIT INCREASES ARENT RAISES. YOU WOULD OF GOTTEN THEM, UNION OR NO UNION.
FOLKS UNLESS YOU ARE TOPPED OUT OR BRAND NEW(WHICH IS ONLY A FEW OFFICER) YOU WILL GET A 4% RAISE.
THE 5% MERIT INCREASE YOU WILL GET WAS COMING TO YOU REGARDLESS... THE UNION DIDNT DO ANYTHING SPECTACULAR TO GET YOU THE MERIT INCREASE.
AS FOR THE NEXT YEAR THERE IS NO RAISE NOR THE YEAR AFTER THAT. YES, YOU WILL HAVE MORE STEPS TO EARN MORE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN BUT HOW ABOUT A LITTLE BONE NOW. THE UNION WAS TOO FOCUSED ON THE 25 AND OUT, WHICH IS A GOOD THING. THEY SIMPLY OVERLOOKED A TON OF SMALL ISSUES SUCH AS:
1. NIGHT SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL(NONE OF THE OFFICIALS ASKED FOR IT BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL SENIOR AND COULD CARE LESS)
2. TAKE HOME CARS OUT OF THE E&W(WERE ABOUT THE ONLY AGENCY THAT DOESNT ALLOW THIS)
3. 5% INCREASE IN PAY FOR DETECTIVES
ASK THE REPS WHAT THEY PLAN ON DOING WITH THESE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS BEFORE YOU RATIFY THE CONTRACT. THIS IS YOUR MONEY, MAKE SURE YOU GET IT WHEN YOU RETIRE. THE REPS WILL TELL YOU THAT THE CITY IS ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR RETIREMENT. THIS IS COMPLETE AND TOTAL B.S. THE CITY RAN THE PORF INTO THE GROUND AND YOU DONT SEE THEM STEPPING UP AND OFFERING TO PAY THAT BACK. IF WE CRASH AND BURN WITH THIS PENSION THEN WE ARE TOTALLY OUT OF GAS.
EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE YOU VOTE ON THIS CONTRACT. ASK OTHER PEOPLE BESIDES THE REPS ABOUT THE PROPOSED CONTRACT ON US.
IF 4% IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THEN VOTE YES...
RIDICULOUS...
To the last poster...If you feel that strongly that you were totally screwed, they have not interviewed for the new Officer Rep position yet. You can throw your name in the hat along with myself, James Pratt, and Brian Wallace and interview. Then the next time neogotiations come around you can sit on the team and help us get a contract you feel would be better. Let me know and I will personally ask each member of the Lakeland Chapter to let you interview. We all want to make the Union stronger and guys/ladies like yourself can only help. Obviously you have been to or been involved in neogotiations before so, your experience can only be a positive for OUR UNION. Let me know and I will get you the interview.
Thanks,

Stacy, well said. The unfortunate part is that your suggestion to become an ACTIVE member as a rep makes too much sense. But for many it's better to sit on the sidelines without saying anything and then ***** when changes are proposed. (Just look at how many times this topic has been viewed, compared to the number of posts)
I feel as if it's a positive change and I will also be voting YES. I'm sure by now everyone is aware that the proposed contract is making things better for the MAJORITY and that it's not possible to satisfy EVERYONE. See you guys/gals at the polls.
P. Guity
You might want to get the facts right before you talk about the contract...do you want 25 and out no age or would you rather wait until age 50 with a 25% penalty? got to start somewhere...20 and out can't happen over night. why would you want to leave with 60% of your pay instead of 75% of your pay?
3% multiplier per year.....20 years only gets you 60%...dah!
The pay puts us above the median with starting pay $5,000 higher than PCSO. top out is strong considering the tax reform.
the union did ask for shift differential and specialty pay....unfortunately with the tax reform this was not the year but the ground work has been set for the future. Rome wasn't built in a day..
Here's a simple question. Since Sep 06, what have non union city workers received in cost of living raises and merit raises (if any) and how does this compare to the proposed contract? For example, if non union workers received 3% each October and a 5% increase for merit, that is 11% compared to 9% being offered currently at signing. Also factor in the time they have been collecting any c.o.l. or merit increases while negotiations have been in progress. Who comes out better? Seems like if non collective bargaining workers have faired better these past 15 months, a no vote should be a no brainer, unless the 25 and out is your main concern.
Other city workers got 3% last year and 2.5% this year which equals 5.5%. All who were scheduled for step/merit increase in the union got there step increase. Obviously your not topped out and haven't had to live with just a cola. Adding steps is a plus! 25 and out is huge. 3% multiplier a year after 25 years is also big. Pension based on time with no penalty rather then age is the way it is done. Those wanting to leave at 25 years regardless of age can now go without that BIG PENALTY the city imposes. Those wanting to stay can stay at a 3% multiplier if they wish. Rome was not built in a day and you can not "Force" the city to do anything they don't want to do. The union negotiators did a great job an I'm voting YES!

AMEN
Our union reps worked hard and we did receive some good advantages over our existing pension plan as LPDBLUE mentioned in the previous post. Not everyone can be happy, but it's a start.
As I understand it, we will have the ability/flexibility to control the pension in the future should the plan do well. When was the last time the city did that for the retirees?
I too, like D.J. fall have been here a while and could lose some money under the new plan. However, the new plan has the ability to improve over the next several years prior to my retirement. Whether it's increasing the multiplier or providing a COL increase, it would increase the amount above the city's plan which would remain the same forever.
I vote YES!
I vote to VOTE. Were all LOSING money by not collecting what the city and union have already agreed on. It's time to get this show on the road and VOTE. It dosen't matter if you vote yes, no or I don't give a F%&K. Let's VOTE.
BTY, I vote YES :D
Thanks for the info. I can stomach a loss of 3% and 2.5% over the last 15 months. Just wanted to make sure we weren't taking two steps back and one step forward.
looks like the contract that received so much praise by the elected officials fell short of its promises.

I WILL BE VOTING NO UNTIL THE UNION GETS IT RIGHT. IF THE UNION CANT GET IT RIGHT THEN WE NEED TO REVOTE ON THE ELECTED OFFICIALS. IF THAT DOESNT WORK THEN WE NEED A NEW UNION.
Your not topped out, which means you came here after 2001 when there was no PORF so of course you would not get any PORF. Your retirement would begin at 62 years of age, so by all means I would vote no because heck we all want to work until we're 62. Look at the big picture, not just the immediate ramifications. Vote yes.
THE OFFICERS ARE GETTING SCREWED AGAIN. VOTE "NO".
THE OFFICERS ARE GETTING SCREWED AGAIN. VOTE "NO".
Go back to Mayberry and have some of Aunt Bea's apple pie along with Barney, Opie and Gomer. I am voting YES along with the overwhelming majority. Let's vote already!
I CAME HERE IN 1999 AND AM NOT TOPPED OUT UNTIL FEBRUARY. I HAVENT BEEN DENIED ANY MERIT INCREASES EITHER...
I ORIGINALLY DECIDED TO VOTE NO BUT WITH MORE INFORMATION I WILL BE VOTING YES.
IVE BEEN ON VACATION FOR A COUPLE WEEKS SO I HAVENT BEEN IN THE KNOW. IF 260 HASNT BEEN VOTED IN, PLEASE CAST A VOTE FOR HIM. FOR THOSE OF US WHO KNOW HIM, HES A STANDUP GUY AND WILL BE HONEST WITH US. I JUST HOPE THIS ELECTION IS LEGIT UNLIKE THE LAST TIME WHEN THE WOOL WAS PULLED OVER OUT EYES.
