Elderly man robbed outside restaurant

A crowd of on-lookers watched as an elderly man was attacked and robbed outside a Sarasota County restaurant last week.
Deputies say it happened last Wednesday night at 5:42 p.m. outside Tasty Home Cookin' on South Tuttle Avenue in Sarasota County.
The 82-year-old victim was standing outside the restaurant when deputies say 22-year-old Jonathan Wendell asked him for money. The victim asked Wendell to leave him alone and walked away from him. The victim tried to walk towards his car and reached in his pocket for the keys. A report says that's when Wendell grabbed his elbow and pulled him back, and a struggle began. Wendell grabbed the victim's wallet and knocked him to the ground.
Wendell took the cash from the wallet and threw it at a witness. A second on-looker hopped on his motorcycle and followed Wendell down the road. After he caught up to him, the suspect looked at that witness and asked, "do you believe that man, that old guy tried to steal my wallet." The motorcyclist demanded that Wendell hand over the wallet but he just threw nine dollars at him and ran.
Deputies caught up with Wendell a few blocks away and brought him back to the restaurant where he was positively identified by the victim and witnesses.
Wendell is charged with robbery on a victim over 65 and being held in the Sarasota County jail on $10,000 bond.
