Pickup driver fleeing deputies crashes into 7-11 sign

SARASOTA COUNTY -- A man was critically injured today after his pickup slammed into a 7-11 sign.
The crash happened near Lockwood Ridge and DeSoto Road shortly after 11 a.m.
Authorities said they tried to stop the pickup, a Ford F-150, but the driver sped off with deputies in pursuit, heading north on Lockwood Ridge.
Deputies called the pursuit off near Gocio Road, but the driver continued northbound.
Witnesses say the driver swerved to miss another vehicle, lost control of the pickup, and hit a curb, causing a tire to blow out.
The pickup continued north and hit the sign.
The impact was hard enough to push the driver and the pickup's dashboard into the rear of the pickup's cab.
It took emergency crews about 45 minutes to extricate the man from the pickup. He was flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment.
