The Buzz

MR. POPULAR If a popularity contest was held tomorrow for sheriff, Larry Scapecchi would win in a landslide.

That's according to the Police Benevolent Association's straw poll released Nov. 9. The PBA surveyed about 400 road deputies and 400 corrections officers that make up the union's membership. The union asked them who they think the PBA should back in the 2008 election.

Scapecchi, a recently retired 25-year veteran of the Escambia County Sheriff's Office and Democrat candidate for sheriff earned 73 percent of the votes cast, while Sheriff Ron McNesby, who is seeking a third term, garnered 21 percent. McNesby's Republican challenger David Morgan received 3 percent, while Democratic challenger Sam Lucas also got 3 percent.

In his defense, McNesby has never been very popular with the Northwest Florida chapter, which in 2004 supported his Democratic challenger John Powell. Then, the PBA cited McNesby's failure to negotiate a contract, the lack of improved benefits and wages and the perceived poor treatment of officers.

Meanwhile, McNesby is winning the fundraising race collecting more than all three challengers in the latest quarter reported$30,025 to $29,075.

Who is Scapecchi? He's a former lieutenant, who was a correctional officer, investigator and supervised the narcotics division among other duties in his career. He currently owns a building and roofing company.
