Woman says she hid in the shower while her ex shot another man

NORTH PORT -- Anna Amato knew she was in trouble when she heard what sounded like gunshots and her ex-boyfriend's voice early Thursday morning.

Amato said she hid inside her bathroom, ducked down behind her shower curtain, as David "Blade" Campbell went from room to room calling her name.

Campbell is a felon with a long list of previous arrests who Amato says was violent with her as recently as last week.

Authorities say that Campbell, 38, shot Amato's new boyfriend three times in Amato's Pocatella Avenue home as Amato hid behind the shower curtain in the bathroom.

The curtain may have saved her life.

Amato's boyfriend, Shawn Nichols, 39, was taken to Bayfront Regional Medical Center in St. Petersburg with gunshots to his stomach, thigh and buttock.

"Thank God he didn't look in the shower," Amato said Thursday. Amato, 46, said she does not plan to sleep in her North Port home for a while.

Campbell is charged with the shooting and was arrested in Port Charlotte on Thursday after North Port police sent out a statewide alert.

Authorities had been searching for Campbell for more than 12 hours when Charlotte County sheriff's deputies caught up with him at Quesada Avenue and Hinton Street after a short chase on foot.

Campbell, 38, faces charges of attempted murder, armed burglary and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Campbell has a criminal history going back to a 1988 drug conviction in DeSoto County.

He has served more than eight years in Florida state prisons on various convictions, including grand theft auto, cocaine possession and threatening to kill people.

Amato said she has been seeing Nichols since July and that Campbell could not accept that she had moved on.

Upon hearing that Campbell was in police custody she said: "That's good. He needs to be there."

Why is it that this forum must always be used to tarnish cops? If people want to use this as a way of b*tching to cops or about cops, remember this, LEOAFFAIRS.com was institued for police officers to talk amongst themselves. Now I'm not saying that negativity would'nt exist if only cops were here, but look at any other department's sites and the sour grapers such as this jerk (above) that come here and post their crap claiming to be a cop is placidic at best. To the detectives that worked this case, I say, GREAT JOB! To the ignoramus that wrote the above quip, I wonder how you would have felt if that guy had come after one of you're loved ones and shot them. How would you feel about those detectives then for catching him?
