Hi

Also interested in moving out of Florida as a certified, experienced officer to work in Texas. I've been searching the Internet to get some info on transferring certifications. I came across an article on "challenging" TCLEOSE as an out of stater. Can anyone provide any insight on the process?

Thanks and everyone be safe.

In Tejas the norm is to attend the whole academy, or challenge the teclose test. Texas does not have lateral/modified academy. Most large agencies will require you to attend their academy. For example you could have 10 years experience as a leo with San Antonio PD, and then if you go to Fort Worth PD you will still have to go through their academy.

I'm not sure it you got your answer by now, but while I was in the Eastfield academy, we had a student that was from another state. He only had to take certain classes. If I remember correctly, he was taking an abreviated academy. Yet, at the same time I also had a guy in my class that was former LEO from CA and in TX and he had to go through the whole academy. The difference was how long they had been out of LE.

It may be worth it to call Eastfield academy (Mesquite) and ask Neil or Marcia, they would know.

I DEFINATELY DO NOT CLAIM TO BE A PROFESSINAL ON THE TOPIC. I am just mentioning 2 of the students in my Academy class.

Good luck.

Here is the correct information.

To simply get your Peace Officer license you must do the following:

1. Take the Texas Officer Supplemental Course. See it here: http://www.classen-buck.com/id122.htm?&Vl=3&Tp=2
2. Submit an application to TCLEOSE for an "Out of state exam endorsement". See it here: http://www.tcleose.state.tx.us/content/publications.cfm
3. Take and pass the Basic Peace Officer's written exam at an authorized testing facility. See the list here: http://www.tcleose.state.tx.us/content/ ... viders.cfm (http://www.tcleose.state.tx.us/content/testing_exam_providers.cfm)

Here are the general qualifications for out of state LEO's.

Individuals from other U.S. states must:

1. provide proof of successful completion of a state POST-approved (or state licensing authority) basic police officer training academy (with equivalent course topics and hours of training at the time of initial certification or licensure);

2. have honorably served (employed benefits eligible) as a sworn peace officer for 12 consecutive months, following initial basic training, with an agency in the state where the license or certificate was issued;

3. be subject to continued employment or eligible for re-hire (excluding retirement);

4. the applicant’s license or certificate must never have been, nor currently be in the process of being, surrendered, suspended, or revoked;

5. have a copy of all their military discharge(s) (DD-214) (if applicable), all must be under honorable or general-under-honorable conditions; and

6. have successfully completed the “Texas Supplemental Peace Officer Course” #1018.

Required Documents to Accompany the Application:

1. A certified or notarized copy of the basic training certificate for a police officer

2. A certified or notarized copy of a Federal Agent’s License or Credentials; or a certified or notarized copy of the police officer license or certificate issued by the state POST

3. A notarized statement from the state POST, current or previous employing agency(s), or federal employing agency revealing any disciplinary action(s) that may have been taken against any license or certificate issued by that agency or any pending action

4. A notarized statement from your employing agency(s) confirming time in service as a police officer, federal officer or agent

5. A certified or notarized copy of your valid state-issued driver’s license

6. A passport-sized color photograph (head and shoulders with a plain background), signed with your full signature on the back of the photograph

7. A copy of all your military discharge(s) (DD-214) (if applicable); all must be under honorable or general-under-honorable conditions

8. A copy of your certificate showing completion of the “Texas Supplemental Peace Officer Course”

9. An attached certified check or money order in the amount of $150 (the application fee is non-refundable and is assessed to cover the cost of reviewing and processing your application)

The Commission may request that applicants submit a copy of the Basic and Advanced Training Curriculum for equivalency evaluation and final approval.

Once you have your Peace Officer license you are eligible to be hired by any agency willing to hire you. Large agencies will generally require you to attend their academy, but even that is changing. The Texas Department of Public Safey has now shortened its training process to 8 weeks for "laterals". See here: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/trainingac ... elinks.htm (http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/trainingacademy/Trooper_Trainee/traineelinks.htm)

You can study and pass the 1018 Officer Supplemental Course in about 2 weeks if you hit it hard. This is certainly easier than another 16 week academy.
