Hogle files for sheriff

Longboat Key police chief Albert F. Hogle today became the fourth candidate to file to run for sheriff since Bill Balkwill announced he would not run for re-election next year.

Hogle, a Sarasota city commissioner from 1998 to 2001, promised better fiscal responsibility and increased patrols to deter crime.

“I promise to treat every taxpayer’s dollar with respect,” Hogle said.

During a press conference on Wednesday near the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Hogle said his time on the city commission gives him insight on setting budgets and the political skills to work with other elected officials.

In 2001, Hogle left the Sarasota city commission to become the chief of police in Bradenton. He was there for just over a year before becoming the Longboat Key police chief.

Hogle is the third Republican to file for the race. David Gustafson and John Herlihy, both former sheriff’s department officers, are also running for the post. Curtis Lavarello, a registered Democrat, has also filed to run.
