It's clear that Pembroke Pines police Detective Dean Soubasis loves a challenge.

As part of the special operations unit, he helps take down drug dealers, conducts hours of surveillance to catch burglars and investigates homicides. He's also on the dive rescue team and a member of the SWAT team.

''I like solving people's problems, catching a suspect that has victimized someone, returning property to them,'' said Soubasis, who has been a detective for 11 years.

Soubasis' special operations unit acts as a crime suppression team, looking for crimes in progress, such as robberies, burglaries or drug-dealing. The unit also works with other detectives to solve cases. If the the drug unit needs someone to make an arrest during a drug deal or a a homicide detective needs help chasing down leads on a suspect, Soubasis is their man. Recently, he has been working on leads to solve a spate of burglaries that has plagued Pembroke Shores.

The job requires a lot of patience, a side of detective work rarely seen on TV. Soubasis said that when they're conducting surveillance, it can take anywhere from six hours to two days before anything happens.

''As long as you've got that eye and there's a movement, you have to be able to relay that information and alert the other detectives,'' he said.

Determination is also important in catching a suspect. In February 2006, a gang brutally beat a boy and his girlfriend in the parking lot during the annual chili cook-off at C.B. Smith Park. After 2 ½ months of painstaking work interviewing witnesses and piecing together leads, eight people were arrested.

''It came through interviewing people who were there, friends of suspects and getting leads,'' Soubasis said.

His thorough and resourceful nature is well-known in the department, said Soubasis' boss, Sgt. John Birkenheuer.

''He's extremely meticulous. He doesn't do anything halfway when given a case,'' Birkenheuer said.

Soubasis, 40, has been on the city's underwater search and recovery rescue dive team for 10 years. In addition to recovering drowning victims or rescuing people in car accidents, the team searches the city's murky waters to recover knives, guns and other evidence.

''We went down to Key West, where there had been a homicide about three years ago,'' Soubasis said. ``The murder weapon had been taken apart and thrown in the canal and we recovered four out of the five pieces. It was a big thing.''

Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the dive team also has been assigned to inspect the hulls of ships at ports from Palm Beach to Key West looking for explosives.

Soubasis is also member of the city's SWAT team. He had to undergo a rigorous three-week course of daily seven-mile runs and training exercises hauling 50 pounds of gear. He trains with the team every month.

Despite all the crime arrests, Soubasis thinks it's important to know that these aren't all bad people.

''Sometimes decent people make mistakes,'' Soubasis said. ``For whatever reason, a lot of people shake your hand when you send them to jail and tell me thanks for treating them decent.''

Soubasis' family moved to Pembroke Pines when he was 3. His parents still live in the house he grew up in. His brother, George, is a 20-year veteran of the Pembroke Pines Police Department.

After graduating from Cooper City High School, he worked as a security guard at Hollybrook Golf and Tennis Condominiums for six years. At the same time, he attended Broward Community College, studying criminal justice. Working closely with police and fire rescue gave him his first taste of law enforcement, and he applied to various police departments.

Birkenheuer said Soubasis is well-liked and respected in the department, coordinating family camping trips and taking his colleagues on fishing trips on his boat.

''One time, we went white-water rafting and had an eight-car caravan to a bed-and-breakfast. We had a great time,'' Soubasis said. ``They are some really good people. We're more like a family.''

When he's not on the job, Soubasis scuba dives and fishes.

He's fond of taking his six nieces and nephews out on his boat to go swimming.

''They're great. I'd do anything for them,'' he said.

Excellent job Det. Soubasis! I was surprised to hear the name associated with the article at first. I wasn't aware their is two surnames. Good job salvaging the family name.
