Was it by folding the backseat down and exiting from the tailgate? We've been waiting for this to happen with the caged SUVs. It went up the chain and nothing happened. Maybe that'll change. A possible liability issue...thank God they didn't hurt anyone else with the vehicle and/or firearms.

Please tell me that they were properly handcuffed, behind their backs?

These guys were being arrested for burglary and grand theft. They had a criminal history taller than you are. Yes, they were properly handcuffed behind their backs. These weren't park rule violators being arrested for consumption of alcohol. Picture it, the officer is by himself searching a car that the suspects lived in, and gathering the rest of their property from under the bridge where they spend most of their time, it's 94 degrees outside, and the only way to keep the suspects from going signal 7 in the backseat of the patrol car is to keep the cage window open to get AC to them. Call me crazy, but it sounds like equipment failure.

O.K. let's think about this.

Proper order of arrest:

1. The officer arrests said dirtbags and stuffs them into the back of his vehicle.

2. WAIT FOR BACKUP!!!! We have radios that will work (most of the time) throughout the state. Get on the radio with dispatch and call for backup. Keep them cool by sitting in the front seat of the vehicle and them in the back.

3. Wait for backup to arrive.

4. When backup arrives, then search the vehicle while the backup watches the dirtbags.

5. Transport dirtbags to jail.

Do we need to review this procedure?

All deputies, officers, troopers etc. will be glad to offer assistance to any LEO who needs it. This is why I always stop for any LEO on the side of the road. Do we need to review this procedure?

The DEP Officer called for backup before he even arrested the two guys. He had backup until they were handcuffed (behind their back as policy) and were placed into the back seat of the SUV. At this time, the 3 backup officers decided that everything was under control and left the scene. That is when one of the suspects claimed his wallet was down by the river and the officer went to retrieve it. While his back was turned, one of the suspects managed to get his hands in front and squeeze himself through the opening between the front and back seat.

Seems like he was following procedure.

Just Passing Through is correct. There were three backup officers on scene when the arrests were made. Once the suspects were secured in handcuffs and in the back seat of the officer's patrol car, the backup officers left.

Are you telling me that you have never searched a car, or gathered a suspect's belongings, while that suspect was handcuffed in your car, and there was no other officer babysitting the suspect? If you said yes, you're either lying, or don't make many arrests.

While other agencies are willing to help, we can't take advantage of that. While it would have been nice to have one of the backup officers sit and act as a babysitter for the DEP officer, how happy would the backup officer's supervisor have been if he wasn't able to answer calls for an hour and a half because he was babysitting two guys properly secured in a patrol car.

It's easy to monday-morning quarterback...should have....would have....could have...

By the way, has anyone mentioned that through an intensive investigation these two guys were taken off the street for a car burglary? Keep on making your alcohol cases and writing tickets to people for having dogs off a leash...after all, thats what we're there for...right?

Dont know who the officer is yet but good job....
dont worry about tally they will have your back because they have too, due to most of our vehicles are not set up like they should be and not to mention that the two goof balls that do it have no clue of what they are doing. now that his daddy is gone maybe the big boss will realize that those two need to go on down the road. dont get me wrong they are good guys ( if you like snakes ) just time to move on
