A 26-year-old Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer was killed in a single-car crash about 2 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike near Southern Boulevard west of West Palm Beach, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Dara Louise Demarest was driving in her 2001 Nissan Altima and for unknown reasons veered off the road and struck several trees, FHP said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, FHP said.

Demarest worked in the Jupiter office since February 2006.

"She was eager to learn, a quick study," said Dani Moschella, a public information coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's. " She wanted to be the best officer she could be and didn't mind getting her hands dirty."
