Grant me the serenity to ignore the trolls,
the courage to debate with honest opponents,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Amen

This post seems to go with the old saying, "Don't argue with idiots because from a distance no one can tell the difference."

btw, like the avatar

Grant me the serenity to ignore yes-men,
the courage to debate with independent thinkers,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Amen.

A "Yes" man can also be an independent thinker. They independently thought that if they did not follow the rules, policy or a directive that they would risk losing their job or cause a problem within the system.

If you are referring to an independent thinker as one who does not play by the rules then and wants to buck the system because they thought they knew better then you are not using the right word to identify them. The better word for this type of person is irresponsible...just a thought

There is nothing wrong with self motivation to achieve success. In this world of averages, it is always good to be above average...

seems to me the guest defines yes-man as one who blindly follows along and says and does anything or nothing just to avoid rocking the boat, a butt-kisser, a backstabber who will do whatever to get ahead, get promoted or to screw over another deputy. maybe the guest can elaborate? lots of those yes-men around. there is more to being a deputy than being a yes-man. sometimes the boat needs rocked. all the cheerleading yes men are more dangerous than those willing to speak up and point out what might be wrong. the children in comannd take it personnaly and use thier authority to shut up the whistleblowers. sometimes (now cover your ears) the boat needs a new captain. in otherwords a new sheriff.

Hey retnuh...when are you going to register your name so people can Private Message you. So many questions for you....but no where private to ask. Inquiring minds wanna know....

A "yes man" by definition is NOT an independent thinker. CG you are very good at rationalizing and twisting and spinning to make reality into your own special version.

"They independently thought that if they did not follow the rules, policy or a directive that they would risk losing their job or cause a problem within the system." That statement is sheer idiocy. How clever you define independent thinkers with being insubordinate or irresponsible. I see through you and I think most other independent thinkers, like that retnuh guy do too.

Independent thinkers have brought this agency many new ideas and methods to accomplish our goals. The results have been different shifts, new equipment, new unirforms and family activities not seen in other agencies nearby. Since the ship does have a captain, I'll remember that I was appointed to act in his stead. I'll respect the orders, assignments and opportunities given to me by this "captain" until such time that I may have to be sworn in under a new one. This isn't kissing up or blindly following but respectfully obeying rank, structure and the integrity that has been observed by the U.S military since our independence. What personal gain do I seek if I don't compete for rank or medals?

Ten8hotel -- you and I seem to be in much agreement. i act to support the agency and ist policies whether i agree with them or not. still i think we would all be better off in an environment that did not seek to punish those who have legitimate or seeemingly legitimate questions or problems about the agency and what it does. and still i think its time for a........... well, you know.

oh and by the way we are not military. there should be room here for respectful disagreement and not not simple obedience. and yes i was in the military for a few years. as for registering we have discussed it and are still discussinnng it.

I honestly believe that the only way you will be able to work for a new Sheriff is when you quit working here and go work for another.
