CCSO uses eBay to auction seized property
The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office has been auctioning seized property (from drug dealers or from felony arrests) on websites, such as eBay, after learning through an attorney general's opinion that it is legal to do so.

Since 2005, the department has sold more than 130 items on the site and collected about $30,000. Buyers have been from the Midwest, North Carolina and other parts of the country.

It's cheaper to sell items on eBay rather than do it the old way and hire an auctioneer, set up a tent and move the items to that location. Law enforcement departments are required by law to pay for ads to publicize a sale, too. You don't have to go through the logistics to set up an auction.
