Gov. Charlie Crist and the Cabinet Tuesday named a top Florida Department of Law Enforcement official to head the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Electra Bustle, an FDLE assistant commissioner, will be the first woman to lead the motor-vehicle agency and succeeds Fred ****inson, who is stepping down Monday after serving as director of the department since 1992.
Bustle starts Tuesday.
"She has the skills and professionalism needed to serve the people of the state of Florida," Crist said in nominating Bustle, who he noted is a fellow Greek-American.
Bustle, an attorney, got to know Crist during his time as Attorney General, when FDLE worked with the Cabinet office on a range of law enforcement-related issues. Bustle helped develop an FDLE database implemented to weed out sex offenders among the thousands of contractors who work for Florida school districts -- an innovation developed in response to the death of Jessica Lunsford, a 9-year-old Homosassa girl abducted and killed in 2005.
"I'm looking forward to hitting the ground running," Bustle said.
