Gov. Charlie Crist and the Cabinet Tuesday named a top Florida Department of Law Enforcement official to head the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Electra Bustle, an FDLE assistant commissioner, will be the first woman to lead the motor-vehicle agency and succeeds Fred ****inson, who is stepping down Monday after serving as director of the department since 1992.

Bustle starts Tuesday.

"She has the skills and professionalism needed to serve the people of the state of Florida," Crist said in nominating Bustle, who he noted is a fellow Greek-American.

Bustle, an attorney, got to know Crist during his time as Attorney General, when FDLE worked with the Cabinet office on a range of law enforcement-related issues. Bustle helped develop an FDLE database implemented to weed out sex offenders among the thousands of contractors who work for Florida school districts -- an innovation developed in response to the death of Jessica Lunsford, a 9-year-old Homosassa girl abducted and killed in 2005.

"I'm looking forward to hitting the ground running," Bustle said.

FDLE is losing out, but DHSMV is getting a heck of director! Maybe she can straighten it out!

She needs to fire some FHP boys first.

Now they can suffer through having a "leader" that has never been a cop like we did for so long.

Shows what you know. Electra was a lawyer first, advised all of the sheriffs of Florida for years, worked at DHSMV legal, advised Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, went through the academy, then took a sworn position and worked her way up to MAJOR over the jail and human resources. She's more of a cop than most of you have ever known or given her credit for.

The cops that actually get on here and say that a "leader" of a law enforcement agency HAS to be a "cop" are off base and slightly egotistical.

A good leader makes sure your pay is comparable, your work conditions tolerable, you have the right equipment and technology to get the job done, listens to input of subject matter experts and makes reasonable and credible decisions, you are treated fairly, and some level of understanding about the issues... etc...

Having written a ticket or made an arrest would not be first on my list!

She came from Sarasota Sheriffs Office- take a look at that board, they bash every current leader they have-- all of whom are "cops"-- and you know what they are bashing them about- things like treating people unfairly, favoritism, pay, work conditions...

Really, get serious!
